I booked the “Make Your Own Perfume Workshop with a Fragrance Artisan” in Rome for €150, expecting an authentic, hands-on experience with quality perfumery materials. Unfortunately, the reality was very disappointing. The session took place in a café with no proper studio setup. The “instructor” didn’t know anything about perfumery aside from the most basic information she probably been taught in 2-hours, and kept sharing incorrect information (for example, calling bergamot a base note!). The materials provided were extremely low quality—an assortment of cheap essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, and tea tree, plus synthetic “mango” and “strawberry” oils that were falsely presented as natural (if you know anything about natural oils, you know that you can never truly extract an aroma from fruits like mangoes or strawberries—they are not like citrus oils and are always synthetic, despite what random suppliers may claim.) Hygiene was also questionable: single-use pipettes were reused after being wiped, which risked contaminating all the oils. Many of the materials smelled mislabeled or adulterated. Overall, this was not an artisan perfume workshop but rather a tourist trap for people with no prior knowledge. I had such an amazing experience taking this leather making course, and a big part of that was thanks to Alice! From the very beginning, she went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. She kindly picked me up and walked me to my first class, which meant so much to me as I was visiting from Toronto.

Alice was incredibly communicative, thoughtful, and supportive throughout the entire process. Her warmth and generosity made the experience even more special, and it really set the tone for a fantastic learning experience.

The instructor Francesca, made me feel welcome and confident, no matter my skill level. The course was well-structured, hands-on, and incredibly informative. I learned everything from the basics of leather selection, tools and pattern making.

What really stood out was the passion and expertise of the instructor—she was patient, encouraging, and shared invaluable tips that only come from years of experience. By the end of the course, I walked away with a custom pattern that I can use to create the bags I've always wanted to make.

I did a lot of research before our family trip to Italy with our three teen/young adult children and everything I read said to plan experiences to engage them in the culture.
