Without doubt the least pleasant AND the most expensive breakfast in Rome.
We were staying nearby a month or so ago and we went to Harry's Bar aware that it would probably be a little over-priced and touristy being so famous but that it would serve an acceptable breakfast. How wrong we were.
I had a ham and cheese omelette which was utterly uninspiring. My 6 year old nephew could make a more tasty omelette. And my girlfriend had very dry scrambled eggs.
We complained after having this diabolical breakfast and we were told that the chef was ill that day. I said that this was totally understandable, but that if they didn't have a proper chef in the kitchen that day then they shouldn't be taking food orders. I asked for my money (58 EUROS!!!) back. They refused and offered a free breakfast instead. This is totally worthless, not only because we probably won't be back in Rome for several years (unfortunately) but more importantly because I will never again set foot in that godforsaken hole. I paste their unbelievable response below.
Francesco @ Harry's Bar (email): "That day unfortunately our chef got sick and could not come to work. This unfortunately does not have to be an excuse, but we ask you to apologize anyway. We do that by presenting this message in our restaurant during your next trip to Rome we will be happy to make you taste the omelettes and scrambled eggs are worthy of our local and you are our spite.
We understand his situation but unfortunately receive daily requests for reimbursement in exchange for reviews on tripadvisor and other and we can not accept these things."
50 years ago it was probably a wonderful and characterful institution, now it is a dingy tourist trap decorated with images of people who used to visit the bar many many years ago. These actors and musicians pictured on the walls wouldn't be seen dead in this bar...
Read moreTOURIST TRAP First things first this is not Harry‘s bar. Harrys bar is a prestigious chain of fine dining that always has “Cipriani” in the name. This is an unofficial rip off of the brand. They go as far as having similar plates and matching the prices to the original menu, however this is extremely unjustified. We should have known as the interior design is horrendous and all the paparazzi pictures remind you that the famous people in them are no better than us as they fell for it as well. Do not go here! I cannot stress how much you should not go here. If anything don’t go for the food. My Overpriced dishwater was called vegetable soup. Impressively bland and boring. (22€) Which is hard to do when cooking vegetables for a reasonable time. My side of fries was the worst fries I’ve ever had and I’ve been to McDonald’s. My friends salmon was uninspiring, Undefined and tasted like nothing. She stopped halfway through. Her side of oven potatoes was not only swimming in stale frying oil, but also somehow dry. I managed to finish my food out of sheer spite to not waste a singular cent on this establishment. One star for somewhat nice waiters. We left fuming. If you want to know that you are in a real Harrys bar, look at the website of Harrys bar where there’s a clear list stating all of the official ones that have...
Read moreHarry's Bar has an old cinema ambiance. Old pictures of stars line the walls. The decor and piano with singer pull you into that world. If that's what you're looking for, you've found the right place. Drinks are over-priced and the food is pricey and just ok. This I expected from other reviews. Service was bad and almost non-existent. When we got our check, it was 80 euro. I put down 100 euro and left the table to use the restroom. When I came back, I didn't have a chance to count my change (highly recommended to do so in Italy so you don't get ripped off) when a man who was not our server snatched it from under me. I went to him to get back the change. He snarled at me and handed me 10 euro. When I argued that it should be more, he started to get loud and make a scene. I told him to forget it and we left. Very unprofessional and the kind of thievery you're warned about when in a foreign country, but not expected at a restaurant who touts class and style. Very...
