Delicious kushikatsu. It's not as foreigner-friendly (no English menu etc) as some of the other options around Osaka, but it tastes much better.
I highly recommend the doteyaki (it's the sticks in the boiling pots of miso-mirin sauce) which is bits of beef, gristle and tendon which are cooked until they're super soft and tender. You can also just ask for "kushikatsu" which is a stick of plain beef. "ebi" for 3 prawns deep fried together, "tamago" for a deep fried hard boiled egg, or just "osusume" for the person's personal favorites, which means you won't know what's coming. They also have vegetables there. Perhaps you could point. I think things are generally around ¥100 a stick, but stuff like the prawns are a lot more. It's all in kanji but they can write the prices down in numerals on paper for you to see.
Before I could speak Japanese, other customers would help me, and the Chinese speaking staff member is really helpful. Make sure you don't double dip into the brown sauce. That's about it. There can be long queues...
Read moreOur first time eating Kushikatsu (fried cutlet skewer) and am glad that we ate at Tengu. The gentleman featured in the photo is foreigner friendly and easy to converse I'm English. Very helpful in explaining how to eat Kushikatsu by dipping once into the Tonkatsu sauce (no double dipping please).
The 5🌟 item that we had 3 skewers each is the beef tendon stewed to tender perfection and slathered generously with their delicious miso sauce. So beefy tasty, slightly chewy yet melting away in your mouth. Use the cabbage leaves to mop up the delicious sauce and juices on your plate, and reset your palate.
We also tried the fried lotus root, mushrooms, prawns, squid, and oysters. All seafood was fresh and fried to perfection and I frankly enjoyed this more robust tasting fried food to Tempura.
If you have not tried Kushikatsu, it's a must try especially in Shinsekai Osaka area where it is said to...
Read moreAfter hearing great things about this place we decided to try the kushikatsu here. We arrived just after they opened as we’d seen so many locals in a long queue the day before and we were hoping to minimise our wait time. Luckily we grabbed the last two seats and were given a menu in English and Japanese which was helpful for us to decide quicker. The staff were also very patient with us as it was obvious that we couldn’t speak Japanese but we were trying our best! We ordered a skewer each of the Beef, Shishito Pepper, Shiitake Mushroom and the Shrimp. And we didn’t wait too long before our food arrived and it was really delicious! Not at all what we expected, with the batter being so light and not like anything we’d had before. Really glad we weren’t scared off by the queue on the previous day and made the effort to go back. Would definitely recommend but we would suggest an early...
