Rainforest Bakery — Restaurant in George Town

just a short walk from Kapitan Kaling Mosque, the bakery has an architecture reminiscent of western counterparts, with various references to New York and other big cities. the baked goods served here are also more traditionally western, like the carrot cake we ordered.

service was friendly and there were plenty of seats in the large establishment. place is also air conditioned.

I’ve never had a carrot cake before and the cake I had here change my mind on well. carrot cakes that don’t look like kueh fried with dark soya sauce. it wasn’t too sweet, had a good amount of texture (walnuts, spices and other little bits resembling fruitcake) and the flavour was quite interesting. the slice, while pretty expensive (RM19), was also large, so we shared it between 2 people. note that there are great numbers of tourists here.

Staff was patient and polite while we figured out what we wanted. We ordered a chocolate croissant, almond croissant, and an egg with avocado sandwich. We wanted to order coffee but the staff kindly explained you need to order beverages at the connecting cafe but both establishments share seating areas. We ordered a cappuccino and caramel latte. My stomach can be really sensitive to milk and I didn’t have a problem with my latte. Everything we ate was absolutely delicious, the bread on the breakfast sandwich was so good. I love baking--- and have baked my own bread for 30+ years! This Bakery, located on Chulia street in central Georgetown, does a superb job!! The ambience of the surrounding are is somewhat "quirky", and caters to "locals" as well as some travellers (who stay in this area). Their Bagels, while not "boiled bagels" (my favourite), are "most memorable", as are their breads [which are highlighted as sandwiches, at the co-joined Mugshot Cafe], cinnamon buns and home made Yogurt. I would definitely suggest a visit to the Bakery, and its associated Cafe. Your taste buds will be delighted!
