This was another really great and quite surprisingly, an authentic restaurant in a commercial tourist country, where you would not normally find this type of quality.
The restauraunt is situated just behind the busy tourist strip of Valleta on a very hilly road.
Food and drinks were awesome, very authentic but catered for all regardless if you like it either mild or spicy. The menu is limited and mixes both authentic and street food dishes, which I think is perfect. The menu has, all well known dishes but executed and presented perfectly.
We ordered the following: Starters: Chicken tikka, Seekh Kebab, Tandoori Jhinga (Prawns) from the Tandoori menu.
Aloo tikki and Nimona (Pan seared Green Pea patty) from the Street food starters.
A traditional Chicken curry (on the bone, drumsticks), Palak paneer (Palak is spinach), Kashmiri Rogan Josh (on the bone) and followed by an Awadhi Chicken Biriyani, accompanied with a basket of Assorted Naan Breads for our mains.
All the starters both Tandoori and street food ones were really nice, well presented and not overpowering like many establishments. The portion sizes are small like tapas, but I think perfect especially as the mains do get bigger. The standouts were definitely the Prawns, Nimona and the Chicken tikka.
The mains were also really good, with the Rogan Josh and the Biriyani the clear winners. Rogan josh was not your standard commercial dish, but on a lamb shank, tender, full of flavour. It does come mild unless you ask for spicy(It appears if asked for spicy, they use a Scotch bonnet based sauce in my opinion , but it works well)
Awadhi Chicken Biriyani was my favourite though. It was subtly fragranted, rice was perfectly cooked with a good amount of chicken.
Chicken curry was different. Was on the bone but only chicken legs, with a thick gravy that was mild but had some sweet notes from the tomatoes used in a curry along with the more delicate spices, that doesn't become too over powering.
Palak Paneer was nice but a little plain if this was your only dish.
The assortment of Breads is a must if you are ordering more than one main, as it justifies the name of the restaurant and gives you a choice of some beautiful naan breads.
From the outside, it does look quite average and simple, which is great. The decor inside is lovely but a strange layout. There are around maybe 10 tables made for couples along with the bar and there is then a quite awkward spiral stair case that leads you to the basement for more tables. Good thing is that they do have a lift, if you do struggle to get down. The toilets are situated upstairs on the end corner of the bar, so this can be awkward to get to especially if you are seated downstairs (Also, only 2 single toilets for Men and Women!)
Although it is very small downstairs, The ambience is beautiful and subtle. With some great touches. Very classy and Modern. The highlight would be the small window downstairs where you could see a team of 5 chefs at work making your meal. I found out later, the chefs/owner are from New Delhi. All dressed in their white attire and wouldn't be suprised if they worked in very well known establishments, as the food does represent that. Must visit, especially if you are wanting an Indian...
Read moreDuring our recent trip to Valletta, Malta, we had the pleasure of dining at Naan Bar, a nice Indian restaurant. Honestly, we prefer to avoid Indian restaurants during our travels as there is always a hit-or-miss (rarely-a-hit-and-mostly-a-miss) proposition. However, based on good reviews and a proximity by chance, we decided to try Naan Bar and it exceeded my expectations in every way possible.
The outside is humble as we walked in from the street - but the moment I stepped inside, the ambience was warm and inviting. The interior has a delightful fusion of traditional Indian décor with a contemporary twist, creating a welcoming & cozy atmosphere.
We were impressed by selection of vegetarian dishes. Each dish was a harmonious blend of flavors, aromas, and great presentation.
Naans (breads) were soft, fluffy, and perfectly baked, and were the ideal accompaniment to the vegetable dishes we ordered. One unique thing about naans is that they include 2 full naans in 1 order (this was the only time we have seen so) - in fact, we joked that the restaurant should be renamed to “Naan Naan”!
The attentive and friendly waitress further enhanced the experience. She was not only knowledgeable about the menu but also eager to provide recommendations and answer any questions we had. Their impeccable service and genuine enthusiasm added a personal touch to our evening. We sat in the basement for a more quiet experience.
Naan Bar is a true gem in Valletta, Malta, offering a remarkable dining experience that will transport you to vibrant streets of India - without any efforts (or the crowds!) From the inviting ambiance and friendly staff that augmented the food we ordered, every aspect of our visit felt outstanding. Whether you're a vegetarian or a lover of any Indian cuisine, Naan Bar should be on your list of gastronomic...
Read moreHad a delivery yesterday, wanted to try this place after hearing mixed reviews be it on price vs quality and the rare 1star nag. As someone who enjoys asian cuisine Overall - I was pleasantly surprised. I've eaten from probably every possible Indian - asian - fusion on this little island. Everytime without fail - heart burn is a result and usually even after a few hours I end up regretting I ate at all.
Understanding the local culture of how takeout cuisine is usually ^enjoyed^ by volume on the go , this place might not compete with those establishments. However let's look at the quality of the end product and was it a meal worth eating.
what I do hope is that the take away price is not valued at the same as a restaurant service value. Which I cannot say as I've not visited personally. During cv19 we all know we make adjustments as long as its fairly quantified.
Naan bar - kudos to you - I'll be visiting you soon!! Paneer - was fresh and tasty Butter chicken was very NICE and I mean wow -little bit sad about volume of chicken but hey I understand quality is not volume and there was a generous amount of the butter sauce - again wow. My naan had a good time ! Garlic naan - finally a bread that's not over dense or half baked - perfectly light and flavorful. Lamb shank RJosh - 2 shanks flavoured and nice balanced not an overkill of spice- rich, tender and juicy. Overall cost - $$+5
Thank you for a...
