SUR Beach House — Restaurant in El Medano Ejidal

FIRST THE GOOD: Perfect view and great location! It is the sister place to BAR ESQUINA (which was also very tasty). The food was excellent at both places. Interesting use of spices/flavors/presentation in Ceviche and other dishes. Prices are a little higher at these two outfits but still pretty decent considering the quality of food however some items were a bit small portion. Definitely worth it for views and ambiance with soft music and ocean (For this 4,5 stars) So you are wondering why 3 stars? What I didnt like...THE BAD: was the blatantly obvious game the waiter was playing. For example we checked the wine menu (decided we would get a bottle of Pinot Grigio price APR. 790 pesos) They had it by the glass and bottle so we asked to taste it first or even take one glass first and if liked we would buy a bottle. Waiter says no problem comes back with 2 pinots to try. One MEEHHH and the other quite nice. So I asked if its the one we requested to try out at 790 pesos /bottle and he says drumroll....."NO its not". Also he had that nervous caught look (but actually you DID NOT GET ME) So I ask how much? Well the two he brought out were like 1090 and 1180 Pesos (with the better one 1180). I was a bit miffed and put off (just a stupid annoyance that did not have to be done..totally uncalled for). I am spending my hard earned money at your establishment(and quite a good amount so why do that cheap move on me). BTW he did have the one I asked for but at that point I said just give me the JOSH California Chardonnay. #2 Now he comes back and says we are out of Josh Chardonnay we have some other one for the same price (I didnt want to go back and look at menu to compare prices)...just was a bit off putting. I am one of those people who yes has the money BUT hates those sneaky little moves to get taken advantage of. #3 and this is a biggie as I have said in other Cabo posts when the bill came its all in PESOs ok got it? So I present credit card and the waiter friggin runs it through in USA dollars. I asked him why if you present in Peso (menu in PESOS/bill in both currencies) didnt you run in Pesos or at least ask. He seemed nervous/sneak look again (keep in mind first he pulled the wine gambit now this), I could have sent him back to cancel the transaction but was so annoyed already (and to be fair maybe I should have made it clear--BAR ESQUINA they did ask how to run it Peso vs Dollar). I will tell you all again in this case I calculated I had lost on that bill literally approximately 35$ USD on a Bill for 2. How do I know? Easy check the conversion rates they are giving you vs googled foreign currency exchange rates daily. * IF it were just the one mistake or put off I would have said 4 stars and maybe 4,5 if he didnt do those two things BUT he did. I implore the restaurant DO NOT teach this to your staff. I get it you want to make more money BUT I AM NOT a stupid tourist spending good money at your restaurant (which is good for you)...so dont make the experience bad for me. Next time I am not sure I would come back and now you get a long drawn out review thats not super flattering (in terms of the trickery) and hopefully...

We had a horrible experience. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

The service and ambiance is good, we ordered the chicharron and octopus tacos, and a tuna that was sold to us as the specialty of the day during lunch. The tuna tasted a little weird but we where hungry and wanted to get a good meal as my girlfriend had to catch a flight a few hours after. 1 hour after we finished eating me and my girlfriend started burning up, we had a temperature, swollen stomachs and a red rash all over our bodies, we had to go to the emergency room as the intoxication was too extreme, we received 2 shots and medicine and my girlfriend ended up losing her flight. The worst part is the way the restaurant handled it as we informed the of the situation while we were at the hospital to prevent other clients from having the same experience and also let them know what we where going through, we never heard back again from them. We called them again and spoke to management the next day and demanded a refund or some sort of compensation as the inconvenience we went through and the negligent way they were handling it was horrible but never heard back from them again.

I´m a local in Cabo, have been to this place many times and did not expect this unprofessional response from a manager. We don’t have food allergies, we are not sensible to water or food in Mexico and we don’t like to speak bad about other establishments but this experience was HORRIBLE!!!! Besides our health risks or future allergies or conseuenses this an cause, we had to pay an expensive intoxication at SUR, then hospitals, medicines, flight...

This place used to be great a few years ago but overtime it feels like it’s lost it’s special touch. The food is very good here with a lot of great seafood and drinks. Service can be hit or miss. They’ve also increased their food minimum for beach chairs (from $50 to $100) but they’re not strictly enforced if it’s not busy.

Our most recent trip we noticed that waiters were slower to come by and would forget certain things we asked for. What’s wild is there are a lot of servers working and the place wasn’t busy, so we’re not sure why service wasn’t better.

The biggest downfall is the need to check your bill because they will add more than 20% for tip but if you’re not reading carefully you won’t catch it. There’s a separate section for “tip” but that’s an additional tip as there is a “propina” which is tip in Spanish. That’s on the management. We had to remind them that they never brought out certain items and to remove them from the bill AND I had to ask to take the tip off as I would leave a cash tip. You’ve gotta check your bill for this and it’s sad that you have to do that.

I’m not sure we’d return because of that. You also get a lot of vendors haggling for your attention when you’re in the front. You also have to check the prices of certain things because sometimes they’ll recommend an item that is really expensive, like the seafood platter that’s...
