Kathmandu Steak House – The Worst Steakhouse Experience Ever!

I had one of the most disappointing dining experiences at Kathmandu Steak House in Thamel. Given its name, I expected a place that specializes in well-cooked, flavorful steaks and meat dishes, but instead, it turned out to be a total disaster. From the food quality to the portion sizes to the pricing, everything was a complete rip-off.

Beef Stroganoff – Where’s the Beef?

I ordered the Beef Stroganoff, expecting a rich and creamy dish loaded with tender beef strips. But what I got was a pathetic excuse for a Stroganoff—almost no beef at all, just a plate full of raw onions in some bland sauce. It was inedible! I don’t understand how they can serve something this awful and still call it a steakhouse.

Pork Chop – No Flavor, No Effort

Next came the Pork Chop, and I had hoped at least this would be decent. But no! It was completely tasteless—no seasoning, no depth of flavor, nothing! Just a sad, dry piece of pork thrown on a plate with the worst mashed potatoes I have ever had. The mashed potatoes were grainy, flavorless, and felt like they had been made days ago. To make things worse, they served a rubbery, overly spicy sauce that ruined the entire dish.

Beef Steak – Tiny Portion, Extra Charges for Everything!

As a steakhouse, you’d expect their Beef Steak to be the highlight, right? Wrong! They had the audacity to charge extra for the sides and sauce—something that should be included in any proper steak dish. And the sides? Old, stale wedges that tasted like they had been reheated multiple times. Absolutely unacceptable!

Overall – A Complete Waste of Time and Money

Portions are ridiculously small

Food quality is horrible

Zero value for money

Hidden extra charges for sides and sauces

Poorly cooked food with no seasoning

Mashed potatoes were a joke

Highly NOT recommended! Avoid at all costs! If you’re craving steak or any decent meat dish, do yourself a favor and go ANYWHERE ELSE but here. This place is a scam that just wants your money without putting in any effort into their food. Worst steakhouse...

I dont normally leave reviews unless it is really good or really bad. This it problaby the worst restaurant I have been to.

I was looking for a good restaurant in the tourist area and found this one. Looked good with 4.5 stars and I didn’t really bother to check the reviews because I was hungry. This was a mistake. It is obvious there is a lot of fake reviews here. If you read the reviews from tourists you will see it is over priced, small portions, bad service and not good quality of the meat etc.

I am laughing a little bit because it is just so many bad things at the same place, I was pretty surprised that this actually were up and running.

When I arrived I were the only one there. First of all I ordered a Coke Zero. It definitely was normal coke and when I asked to see the bottle they spent a lot of time finding it, still unopened (glass only 250ml max).

After that I ordered a triple ostrich tenderloin. Medium rare. I had high expectations. The price was about 2400 without tax. But I were hungry.

The food came quite fast which was nice. But it was a very small portion. The triple I bought was about the size as a normal steak (250g).

Furthermore the two of the three pieces was rare all the way trough. The last one was cooked good and was tender.

When confronted about two of the three pieces being rare all the way trough, they said: “ it is supposed to be like that”. I said “no, I have eaten a lot of steak.” Then they said they would speak with the manager. Returned with a piece of paper with a chart of the degrees of rareness a steak should be. He said 25% of the steak should be rare. When I pointed at my steak and it was completely rare he ignored it.

After 15 minutes the manager came and asked if everything was good. I said no the steak is rare, and he didn’t really say much. I knew I would not be leaving this place without paying the 2400.

I rarely write a negative review, because I generally like to live in the positive, however I'm making an exception because I incurred something noteworthy tonight: The worst steak I've ever been served in a restaurant, anywhere in the world ( and I've visited over 180 countries and territories). We had checked reviews, but they were all of the "local guide, 1 contribution" variety, but we all fancied a steak, coz were off to lentil land (ie the high Himalayas) for a 2 weeks trek, and so we down played our "commensense" when we walked into the almost empty , ambience free restaurant. The menu had all imported steak options hand-crossed off  , and when I enquired the origin of the "house special beef" and was told Pakistan, I guess, more fool me, I should have abandoned ship at that moment, but, having identified the one tolerable bottle of wine on the menu , we decided to throw caution to the wind and order steak. Big mistake. Poorly cooked, tough as old boots, flavourless, this ticked all the " worst-in-class boxes". To be fair, the waitstaff were friendly, and the French fries excellent. But "steak house".....no, Run...
