I visited Café Citizen today, 4/26, after hearing a few locals recommend it. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing. After placing my order, I went to the restroom. Upon returning, I noticed that while the two women preparing food were wearing gloves, the man behind the counter was not. Worse, he was handling the trash can and then using the same unwashed hands and knife to prepare food, including cutting into the avocado toast. I even observed him wiping excess avocado off the knife directly onto the trash can before continuing to cut food with it.
When the waitress, Long came back to the table, I calmly explained that I wanted to cancel my order due to serious concerns about the cleanliness and food safety. Instead of handling the situation professionally, she was extremely rude and dismissive, telling me I should “look around to see if this is a place a I want to eat before wasting food” — even though the café initially appeared clean. She even tried to excuse the behavior by saying, “this is how they do it in Spain,” which I found both irrelevant and inaccurate.
I tried to explain that it wasn’t personal (as she was taking me not wanting to eat very personal). It was simply a health and safety concern, but she refused to listen, raised her voice, and became very argumentative. It got so bad that she wouldn’t even come back to the table to allow me to pay for the drinks we had ordered. Another waitress eventually had to come by and check us out.
This behavior is completely unacceptable. Between the poor hygiene practices, the unprofessional attitude, and the overall hostile customer service, I would not recommend Café...

Read moreA few days ago, three of us went for brunch at Citizen. Two of us at first, a friend arrived a little later.
Our waitress seemed a bit annoyed from the start and immediately gave us the feeling that we had to order as quickly as possible. We then ordered something to drink and told her that we wanted to wait for our friend before eating. When we were all there, we ordered blueberry pancakes, the acai bowl and the hummus.
We got the bowl and the pancakes relatively quickly. We didn't get the hummus. When our friend asked, our waitress said that she didn't have an order for it. He then even apologised and said that he had probably forgotten to say so. She then added another one and said: "Yes, you forgot!". She said this in a somewhat arrogant tone, so it stuck in my mind. On the one hand, he had definitely ordered his food, but even if he hadn't, her behaviour was still extremely unfriendly. I've never experienced this before and it definitely left a negative impression.
The food was quite good overall, although the portions were relatively small. It was too little for both me and my girlfriend. I therefore don't think the price-performance ratio is that good. The cappuccino was delicious.
I liked the decor in the café.
All in all, however, it's not enough for me to go...
