Today Sonámbulo was let down by the kitchen.
The restaurant was full of promise. A tranquil location with contemporary decor. We were met with a warm welcome and seated without a booking.
The menu tempted us with many delicious dishes. We opted for a tomato salad, manzanilla prawns, octopus and sea bass and artichoke stew. Ultimately we were left disappointed by most.
The tomato salad was fresh and nicely dressed with pickled onions and tuna. The three components worked well together and were enhanced by an excellent olive oil.
This dish was followed by the manzanilla prawns. The prawns were plentiful and were well cooked: juicy and succulent. They had not been properly cleaned though and still had their intestinal tract making them a little gritty. The accompanying sauce was heavy on garlic and no taste of sherry was evident. Not a sauce that warranted mopping up with the bread.
Next we had the special: a sea bass and bean stew with artichoke. The dish lacked seasoning. The fish was a little overcooked but not enough to be an issue. Overall the dish was mostly underwhelming.
Next came the octopus. The dish smelt nice and was well presented. The octopus was inedible as it was tough and chewy. I managed two pieces before giving up. The potato was crispy and flavoursome but the seasoning on this dish was too heavy. We spoke to the waiter about this dish and without us even asking he removed it from the bill.
Optimistic that this restaurant had more to offer than was on show today, we opted to have a pudding. We hoped the pastry chef was not the same person who spoilt the octopus.
Alas the rice pudding with coconut milk and citrus was excellent and recovered what could have been a disastrous meal.
Our waiter was very polite, helpful and attentive. He offered us a great insight into the wine selection and was empathetic to our issues with the octopus.
I trust that this restaurant has more to offer but on this occasion was let down by the kitchen. I would go back to give it a second try but would be tentative with...
Read moreWe booked s for a birthday after being recommended this as a good place to eat by a local. Having walked past and checking the menu it looked great. I made a booking online through their reservations system. Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by the serving team and our booking was in their system. We ordered a glass of house red and an absolute vodka and Coke Zero. The server cam over with the absolute and said there was not enough for one measure, it looked more than enough to us, they offered us a premium vodka (grey goose) that was twice the price, as it was a special occasion I opted for it but was taken aback slightly. Being in the hospitality industry I would have just served the premium vodka at the normal price and said this was the last one. We ordered the roast beef (cooked rare - this is stated on the menu) with roast potatoes and mustard. This was slightly lost in translation, a better description would have been, grilled steak with jacket potato and pepper sauce. We waited the expected amount of time and the dishes were served. The food ‘looked’ great. This is where things went on a different path the jacket potato was cold and the steak not much hotter. We called the waiter over and said there was not potato is cold. He took the food back to the kitchen. We were re presented with the same food again a few minutes later. There was not potato is improvement in the temperature of the potato and if any thing the steak had gotten colder. We called the waiter over and said this is not hot either. We asked for the bill for the drinks, paid and left. There are many good reviews for this restaurant, but the are some bad ones as well. I should have checked more fully. Perhaps Monday nights are not a good day to go! The main chef may have the evening off. The serving team were very good as it was not their fault and had to deal with the fallout of a bad meal. As it was a birthday meal and wanted some thing special we went next door and had an excellent meal with...
Read moreEverything amazing, but some top-end wines would have really been the cherry on top of a fantastic experience:
We loved our visit to this restaurant last night. The atmosphere was great, with a really cool industrial vibe. You can tell they’ve put a lot of effort into making the place special.
The service was outstanding. The whole team that looked after us was super friendly, really attentive, and always smiling. They couldn’t have been nicer.
And the food… absolutely amazing! Everything was top-notch. We started with the little chicken Caesar lettuce bites, which were delicious. Then we had the ensaladilla, which had an interesting twist with a touch of pickled carrot on top. After that, we tried the smoked sea bass, which was fantastic—flavourful and tender, with a hint of orange that gave it a unique and unexpected touch.
But the highlight of the night, without a doubt, was the tuna ribs served as fajitas. Incredible. We had never seen tuna ribs like that before. They told us that only two places in the world do it: one in Barbate and this restaurant. It was such a special dish, with amazing barbecue flavours that we absolutely loved.
To finish, we shared the entrecôte, which was an absolute bargain. Good quality meat can be expensive in Spain, but this was a seriously good steak at a great price.
We also had a couple of bottles of wine, which were nice, though if I had to mention one small downside, it would be that the wine list could be a bit more special. As a wine lover, I would have liked to see a bit more variety or some higher-end options. That said, the overall experience was fantastic.
All in all, a highly recommended spot, and we’re really looking forward to...
