The restaurant is conveniently located in the popular Siam district, which has a large shopping mall and many restaurants.
I wanted to make sure I tried some diverse menu items so I could give a fair review, so I tried the grandma’s rice, the famous chicken wings, and the Tom yum goong soup. The food is decent, but the place is a bit over hyped.
All three dishes came out above average, but there are some things they could do better.
Tom yum soup has a bunch of inedible vegetables in it that are so hard they cannot be chewed. The soup flavor is quite good though if you can handle spicy. I suspect a typical westerner will not be able to handle the spice level.
The chicken wings are crispy and quite good. Would be nice if they had a small dipping sauce with them, but the flavor is good. Keep in mind they are about 1/3 the size of a western wing ding.
The grandma’s rice was hearty and filling, but tasted like it was missing something. The flavor pairing is a bit off.
The Thai tea is good, the service is great, and it’s hard to beat the cost. For those three items, Thai tea, and a coke, my total was around 375...
Read moreI. Basil Pork - Just average, it is fragrant but the pork is overcooked, and tastes a little powdery Ii. Phad Thai - Lacking in terms of flavor, just feels quite bland / just slightly sweet, and does not have the fragrance that comes with high heat cooking Iii. Oyster omelette - crispy omelette which was nice, but oysters are very small and no umami Iv. Chicken wings - Nice crispy fry on the skin, but as the restaurant wanted to create the illusion of having “more” by cutting the mid wings into 2, it caused the wing to dry up V. Tom Yum Goong - The only highlight I had over here, super umami, and not a single component that dominates the whole dish, it is the right amount of spice, acidity, even slight sweetness and light enough to make me want to finish the whole bowl by myself VI. “Larb” pork salad - Refreshing side, taste was bright and acidic, making it appetising for other dishes but the meat can be a bit overcooked/powdery
The queue moves relatively fast, but I would say not necessary to visit specially for this unless you’re in the area
