Just awful! Went for a romantic meal before an event at the cathedral next door. We were sat on a table less than a foot away from the couples on either side of us so everybody could hear each others conversations and it felt like a group meal rather than a romantic evening for two. The music was super loud and made the place feel like a club rather than a smart restaurant, we had to raise our voices to speak to each other across the table, it was more my chemical romance than romantic. Our sharing starter of warm breads came out with humous and olives thrown on the side....when we came to eat the bread it was wet(!??!?!)....and I do mean soggy, which was really off-putting. We had to ask for a salt and pepper pot which when they were brought to the table, were both empty. We sent the bread back and the waitress brought out fresh bread that wasn't soggy but it had kind of put us off eating it. We both ordered tandoori chicken burgers for mains. Upon arrival it was clear they had been burnt to a cinder. The presentation was fairly awful, the meals weren't even served with a salad garnish. The onion bargees were incinerated to a point that they weren't even edible. Any taste of tandoori was lost, as the chicken looked like it was straight from Satan's BBQ. Ironically, the fries were under cooked. The manager kindly took the food off our bill, but the evening was very disappointing, I've never had to complain about a meal before, but we'll choose a different venue next time to dine out in Chester.

Visited on an evening with work colleagues for an office Xmas meal. I opted for the set menu of two courses, which cost £23. I chose Salmon Salad for my starter and Beef for my main course. The salad for my starter was nice and fresh, and the salmon smelled and tasted fresh too. The portion of the starter was very decent, not too much and not too little. My main course of beef came in a stew type gravy on a bed of mash, parsnips and carrots and a huge dumpling. The dumpling was very soft but not undercooked. It complemented the beef very nicely. The beef was tender, not at all very chewy and nice and piping hot. The restaurant itself was clean and the staff very friendly! Service between courses was excellent as different members of staff checked on our party to make sure we were OK for drinks or if everything was OK with our meals, which it was. The atmosphere of the bar itself is pretty good and it has that rustic feel to it. Will definitely visit again next time I am in Chester.

After feeling very let down at the Grosvenor hotel we decided to book here for a late night dinner. I think we made the best choice! We arrived at 8.30 and were welcomed by a lovely lady at the bar. We were seated by the window which was perfect for us, we wanted somewhere private. The window opened out as an extra bonus and the atmosphere was great! We had a couple of shots and a bottle of champagne (£10 off on a friday so great deal!). We were served by a really nice chap (sorry I didn't ask your name) :( . Even though it was late and the kitchen took last orders at 8.45, we didn't feel rushed to order. We ended up having the fillet steak and the surf and turf. I can honestly say, it was one of the best steaks I've ever had! Cooked perfectly, everything was hot and my husband loved his surf and turf too. We ended on the banoffee choux bun and brownie. Both were gorgeous. I would come back here in a heartbeat. Keep up the great work! See you next month!

How can you give a poor review without sounding like a crank.

Restaurant approx 25% full. We were told cesar salad was off the menu along with with one of the starters.

Starters were pretty good but for the salt and pepper chicken dish was mainly bread crumbs.

The mains - I ordered a fillet steak - what arrived was a cross between a minute steak and a sirloin. When queried with the waitress who thought it was a sirloin steak seemingly the chef made a mistake. 20 mins later the "fillet" steak arrived. This fillet was more or a sirloin steak and tasted rancid. It was clear they didn't have any fillet and tried to pull a quick one. The waitress asked did I want to try anything else so I changed to lamb shank which must have been too much work for the chef as it was now off the menu. Ended up ordering the fish and chips - as nothing else on the menu - which again took 20 mins to arrive by which time my wife had finished her main course. Told the waitress we werent going to be paying for the main courses given it had taken an hour to get what i got!! Ordered dessert which again wasn't up to scratch but I had lost the will at this stage! Waitress still tried to charge for main courses but once queried found in her pocket a bill without the...

My wife booked at table for 7 people to celebrate my daughters and my birthday, the party included relatives who had travelled to Chester that day. Our booking was for Saturday 3rd at 6.30pm, we arrived on time, drink and food orders were taken pretty promptly so the food order could get into the kitchen. Only 3 ordered starters which arrived ok. Time was ticking on and no sign of our main courses, my wife approached the staff on numerous occasions, the staff apologised and said they were chasing the food orders up but there was nothing they could do about it. At 9pm and still no main meals we we’re losing the will to live, so my wife told the staff if nothing appeared in the next 5 minutes we were going to leave also my brother approached the manager (whom was hardly visible all night) we were told ours was the next food order to come out. Ten minutes passed then yipee food started to arrive BUT it didn’t come to our table. Enough was enough so at 9.30pm we left hungry and cross. We were so disappointed with Duttons and I or any of my family will not be going...
