Firstly, the name is interesting considering it’s a HK style Chinese restaurant. We spotted that this place had recently opened. We thought we’d give it a try, considering the lovely scenic beach view. It took some time to catch the attention of the staff to take our order, however, once I stood up and made it clear we wanted to order they promptly came over. Once we ordered and the food arrived, it became apparent that they got one of the dishes incorrect because we ordered the flat fried satay beef noodles and instead got ramen beef noodles. As it’s a new restaurant I wasn’t sure if I just misread the menu, however, once I started eating it was clear that the ramen was obviously instant noodles with the satay beef on top, which is unacceptable in a restaurant charging upwards of double digits for a meal. Even if they weren’t instant noodles, the shape and texture and flavour resembled it highly. The salt and pepper squid was quite nice and the salt and pepper crab was okayish with the batter being a bit undercooked. The special fried rice was as you’d expect and was a decent sized portion.
The service was a bit lacklustre and random. Who appeared to be the manager of the restaurant was staring me down whilst I chatted to my partner about the food. This isn’t a great sign about faith in your own food. We never got asked for more drinks and had to wait some time to catch the attention of staff for the bill. They moved the other half of our table to sit another customer, not an issue but the positioning of the customer was very awkward as their back was next to our food where my partner wouldn’t of been able to get out to go to the loo for example easily even though there was plenty of space around the restaurant.
We also overheard another customer getting their order wrong but they were much more vocal about the issue to the staff. This is clearly a consistency issue at the moment.
Overall the food is average and the service is slightly below average so we give this a 6/10. Clearly all the 5 star reviews are friends or family of the owners. The menu is enticing and appears to have some good options but I struggle to see why you would not go to china garden next door or HK place up the road for more consistent...
Read moreIts not Scottish, its Chinese! Or is it Spanish as they also describe their food as Tapas. But hold on... They also do full English breakfast with black pudding!! There is certainly some interesting branding at this new confused restaurant in Brighton, although the owner has several other Chinese restaurants in the area. Its a coffee shop by day serving breakfast and cake and a Chinese restaurant by night! Only time will tell if the locals like it, but for us it was very average when ordering from the evening food. Sadly, little has been done to make the space comfortable or attractive, and it appears a cheap refurbishment and minimal investment by the new owner. The menu is predominantly seafood with lobster, prawns, clams and mussels. According to the description the cooking is based on Hong kong style seafood served as tapas. We found the food to be well cooked, but fairly average on flavor. and certainly nothing special. For £9.50 the menu describes Giant tigor prawns, what you actually get is two king prawns of normal size deep fried in salt and pepper batter, not dis similar from any other Chinese restaurant, but quite a small portion for the money. Pork chop on the menu contained no chop? Strangely this dish was just sliced pork deep fried in the same salt and pepper batter. A chop should have a bone and be one piece. The farmed Sea bass we ordered £24 was served on a giant platter, but the fish was tiny. Flavor wise it was the best dish, but the MSG kept us up all night and they do not fillet the fish, its served as is for you to serve yourself. Service was okay, but again not great.
Over all it is a very average Chinese, but with predominantly seafood rather than...
Read moreWe’ve been here twice (the photo was on our first visit). The first time was in mid August and had only been open for a few weeks. Apart from the owner there was only one other FOH serving customers. It was not very busy. We ordered kai lan, which came first but then waited awhile until the beef ho fun was plated. The breadcrumbed seafood platter finally came and it looked impressive. It was cooked perfectly. Beef ho fun wasn’t the best I’ve had, Kai lan was cooked perfectly. There were a few niggles but we put it down to them being only open for a few weeks. The waitress did look stress as she seemed to be doing everything.
Then we came here with friends yesterday evening. They had sold out of seabass. Disappointed, we ordered a variety of other dishes -
salt and pepper soft shelled crab - burnt, didn’t taste of anything Black cod - dry, smothered in breadcrumbs razor clams - over cooked sardines - dry egg yolk prawns - they were ok crab fried rice - was fine the water spinach - only the best thing out of the whole lot
The rice dish came and then nothing else was delivered to our table until an hour later. It’s not so great if they’re struggling when the restaurant was barely half full.
I hope that they improve on their service in regards to the food being delivered but I can honestly say I won’t be...
