Itâs really not hard to write the words âpeanutsâ under the name of a cake or pastry. Or even the letter âPâ! Yes, itâs not legally required - not sure why, that seems wellâŚnuts. But given how serious peanut allergies are, it seems like a sensible thing to do.
We visited Jacobâs bakery on a rainy Thursday afternoon. The greeting we received was tepid at best. The chap working there eyed up my two young sons who were hungrily eying up the delicious looking cakes, with a look that wasnât quite distain but definitely wasnât warmth. Feeling a little rushed we hurriedly ordered cakes for the boys and coffees for the four adults.
As there was no room in the cafe we sat outside in the drizzle. My youngest had ordered a lovely looking salted caramel brownie but alas it was too rich for him. My husband grabbed a fork and took a single mouthful. Immediately he realised that it contained peanuts, which he is allergic to.
We ran inside and looked at the label for the brownie. No mention of peanuts. We hurriedly asked the staff if the brownie contained peanuts. They nodded yes. We remarked that it seems crazy not to have this written on the label next to the brownies.
Whilst my husband stood there feeling desperately ill, he received a lecture about how it is his responsibility to ask about peanuts. That might be true (legally) but the lack of concern and empathy was pretty staggering.
The reaction to the peanuts was utterly miserable. We had to go home immediately and my husband was in bed for the rest of the day and still had stomach pains the next day.
For the love of God, please write any allergens on those cute little signs that you have. Your cafe is adorable and the cakes are divine but we really wish we hadnât...
Read moreOne of our new favourite bakeries in Brighton and there are many! Lovely hot chocolate and latte coffee. On a sunny Sunday the road next to it is surprisingly not that busy since they rerouted the traffic. So itâs a nice vibe to sit outside when the UK weather allows.
I came back again with my wife to sample indoors (it was rainy) and their cakes and toasties. The cake options are lovely as are their pastries. Not the usual basic croissants you get elsewhere, which is a real treat. Nice looking cakes also to buy that we will no doubt go through on our next visit.
There were a few savoury options available. Egg mayo or tomato and mozzarella focaccia bread sandwiches. Some egg/fetta breakfast buns and quiches.
We would have liked to see a little more savoury options but we chose the egg mayo sandwich which was toasted and it tasted lovely too. Enough to share between two of us and also a tasty Pistachio swirl pastry.
Jacob didnât disappoint. Weâll...
Read moreI have been going to Jacobs cafe since it opened. I find it very hard reading reviews about certain blonde man as he has been nothing but authentic helpful kind showing skills of super talented customer service.
The cakes blueberry square & pistachio cheesecake my favourite and chai latte which is natural not powdered form , you canât get the fresh chai in Brighton not fresh cakes or the service every staff member especially The manager and the Ali, Lukus Shaz have been very warm and welcoming , itâs how you speak to people yourself also that counts , the new staff have been warm also , so I feel if anyone is having a personal issue itâs there stuff coming up for healing not the staff and Jacobs cafe . Jacob himself is a gentle compassionate hard working Man and so is his Manager Shemek the blonde man apparently rudely targeted by a personal issue no doubt . May Jacobs keep thriving. Blessings to all . & Thank you for excellent...
