We were going to go to "Fish Plaice" for their fish and chips but we walked past Munchkins earlier and saw their advertised fish and chips for £8-something. When we arrived they told us that was the take away menu... so we felt a little mislead, even though the title of it menu was "take away".
Anyways we thought we'd give it a try. It is the same price as Fish Plaice, roughly.
The customer service was the first thing I noticed, the man seemed like he was in a hurry all the time (The place wasn't even packed). The whole vibe was just screaming understaffed because they take no notice of you and they were all over the place. We didn't feel like we were welcomed, because the waiter's smile disappeared when we asked for water instead of a beverage...and when my water came the glass wasn't clean, had finger prints all over the lip area.
When the food arrived it was quite a small to medium sized plate, battered fish , some chips, peas and salad. For £13.8 by the way.
The chips were good, salad was very fresh and the peas...nothing special about the peas. The part I felt was underwhelming was the fish. The batter was a little thick and looked different to your usual fish and chips batter. (Please see photos)
I did look up their reviews prior to trying but was a little skeptical and had to see for myself.
I wouldn't be coming back here in all honesty... i'd rather spend my £14 elsewhere, so take those reviews that others have written into...
Read moreThey ripped me off. I showed up an hour before closing and they were almost empty, so I felt bad about that, but this restaurant exploits tourists who aren't completely familiar with the currency. If you do go, please be vigilant.
Details: The total including service charge was 13.09 pounds (9.95 for the English Hot Pie and 1.95 for a small glass of Sprite then 10% service charge). Paid 13.50 pounds (two 5 pound notes, three 1 pound coins, and one large 50 pence coin) at the register (waitress asked me to pay the guy there). The owner (I assume) treated the large 50 pence coin as the smaller 10 pence coin and only gave me one pence change.
I noticed immediately, but was uncertain until I walked out the door and looked at the other 50 pence coin and a 10 pence coin that I had.
Sure, it's only 40 pence, and there's a remote chance that it was an honest mistake, but looking back, there were plenty of indications that scamming tourists is the routine. After I sat down, the owner asked me where I was from (under the guise of getting me the correct menu translation), confirming that I'm a tourist. Then the waitress pressured me into getting a drink when I asked for tap water, and delivered perhaps half a can of Sprite in a tiny glass. And finally, the owner took my check when I paid, didn't return the check, and didn't...
Read moreAs a French person used to London's life, my friend and I dropped at that restaurant to have a little something to eat. I wasn't expecting much from that restaurant knowing fully well that it was near the britiBr museum which meant a tourist trap but I was still deceived. I ordered Garlic bread because I wasn't too hungry and it was good but nothing to add. My friend however, had a lasagna plate with chips. She bit into it and dexladeclar was ok. I tried and immediately understood it was bad food. Everything had been frozen before being served you could feel it by tasting it. The fries were also frozen and I usually forgive restaurants for that because the fries are decent, but those were bad. The restaurant says they accept euros and dollars which is in itself rather weird. Before going to the cashier, I did the maths and looked on the internet to see how much I owed the place. Considering the spectacular downfall of the pound during the recent months, I owed the restaurant 4€50. When I arrived, the woman took her calculus machine and announced me something like 5 or 6€. I asked if she were really sure because I had checked earlier and she said yes. I reluctantly paid and we left speechless. Oh, another thing: the bathroom is a mess,...
