If you're one to daydream about extremely tasty cheese and are not afraid of having a meal made exclusively of dairy (and a couple options of cured meat) then this place is for you...
Furthermore, if your idea of british cheese is this cold piece of fat from any supermarket and you are willing to be challenged in your prejudice, then Pick and Cheese is without any doubt your next place to be!
Only using high quality artisan cheese from all over Britain, this conveyor belt cheese bar located within the noisy and busy Seven Dials market has an extended choice of cheeses regularly adapted.
All of which are cleverly paired with a side of either condiments, jams, nuts, dried fruits or even cakes such as flapjacks, shortbreads or brownies.
You are given a variety of crakers to go with your food, but if you prefer bread, no problem, the menu gives you an option for that as well!
Similarly to a sushi conveyor belt restaurant - which the concept is inspired from - the plates on the conveyor have different colors according to their prices, and a paper version of the menu along with a pencil is given to you to help you make your choice and cross off the ones you've already tried.
I have been to Pick and cheese on different occasions, whether alone or with some friends and I have never been disappointed. The quality has always been there as well as was the value for money.
You have 75 minutes to enjoy the place which is more than enough. The only downside (if there was to be one) is that on a really busy day or towards the end of the service the conveyor can get emptied quickly and cannot always get fully refilled. But if the cheese of your dreams isn't on it, you could always ask the lovely and professional staff members to prepare it for you...
My favourites: truffled baron, Stilton paired with brownie, ash coated goat cheese with shortbread and for "dessert" goat cheese...
Read moreThe staff were great and the cheese was delicious. Unfortunately the noise in the open plan space was extremely loud and there was some awful thumping music playing that it made it quite an unpleasant experience. I was checking the place out before gifting vouchers to a friend, but they use hearing aids so I don't think it's suitable. The bar stool was built for tall people, with a footrest too low to use without sitting on the edge of the stool the whole time. It's a shame because the concept is cool and I do love cheese, but I couldn't bear to go again and there's no point taking a friend, you'd never manage a conversation.
They have other restaurants but I'm not sure I'd risk them as you pay a deposit at booking--which is why I stayed this time otherwise I would have gone when I heard the din. Maybe that's why they charge a deposit.
The staff member I asked to turn the music down was very apologetic, I don't think it's very pleasant for them either. It's a shame one business is allowed to have such an effect on the other restaurants sharing that open plan space.
Do check your bill carefully. They tried to charge me for a red (pricy) plate that I didn't have. They took it off the bill immediately when I pointed it out, but you have to be so careful as once they take the plates away to count them up, you don't haven't evidence to remind you or them of...
Read moreSo much fun!! I went all by myself and was a little worried that it would be weird to go alone, but it wasn't. The only problem going alone was that I couldn't try as much. I did the online reservation paying my 10£ the same day I went. When I got there it was quite busy, so I'm glad I did. There wasn't really a place to put my purse so I put it on the floor. I noticed the girl next to me had a handy clip to hang her purse from, but they were not at every seat unfortunately. At each spot is a tray to put your dirty dishes, a list of all the cheeses offered, and a pencil to mark down which cheeses you ate. Later I took mine away so I can look for my favorites to bring home. They gave me a 1L bottle of water which I thought was overkill at first, but then I drank almost all of it due to the saltiness of the cheeses, which were really lovely. My favorite was the one that came with the rose scented Turkish delight. My only complaints are that I wish they had any utensils and I wish there were a few more non cheese offerings. They give you a plate of crackers and a cheese knife, but I would have liked a spoon to scoop up cheese crumbs and the garnishes. I probably would have eaten more if there was some kind of salad; something with a little fiber or carbs to soak up that cheese glut in the pit of my stomach. But perhaps that would be...
