Atlanta’s donut scene is on the up and up, and I am thrilled to add Donnie’s Donuts to my list of favorites (Revolution Doughnuts, Hero Doughnuts, The Salty Donut, and Sub Base Dandy Donuts).
I found Donnie’s Donuts while I was waiting on my carryout from Bomb Biscuit, which is across the street. Originally founded in Florida by Donald and Patti Summerlin, Atlanta is now the only place you can find these cake-based donuts. They showcase 15-20 types of donuts daily, ranging from the simple, vintage flavors to modern flavors such as sea breeze (salted caramel), banana pudding, and strawberry shortcake. Everything is house-made and made with non-GMO sugars.
The customer service is wonderful—the staff is friendly and willing to offer suggestions and insight on the donuts and beverage options.
To top it all off, Donnie’s Donuts has a very cool vibe. The dark, industrial vibe and vintage furniture invite one to hang out with friends and family.
Our half-dozen box included cinnamon sugar, cinnamon sugar sweet potato, peanut butter cup (chocolate, peanut butter, peanut butter chips), sand dollar (cream cheese, cinnamon streusel, powered sugar), french toast (vanilla maple, cinnamon, powdered sugar), and maple bacon. These donuts are decadent and fluffy (for cake donuts). Donnie’s has frosting in place of glaze, but I appreciate its appropriate level of sweetness.
I look forward to trying other donut variations and their beverages. Donnie’s serves fair trade organic coffee, tea (from a female co-op in Thailand), and...
Read moreI ordered the Japanese-style iced coffee. This is a drink I’ve had many times at other cafes in the US and Japan. It’s supposed to be made fresh with a slow drip over ice, resulting in an extremely smooth mouthfeel and a bright taste with low-acidicity. I paid $7.90 plus tip for this and then it was poured out a plastic pitcher from the fridge — so apparently they’re making this in batches, and who knows how many hours or days it had been sitting in there. I took a sip — completely devoid of flavor, barely even tasted like coffee. Just bitter water. I took it home and added some oat milk and sugar to try to salvage it, but it was still just bad. I poured the entire thing down the drain. I feel like this is the kind of place where it’s all hype and branding but no real care for the quality of the products. Also, there are no vegan donuts. With The Salty and Revolution Donuts both within walking distance (which both always have vegan donuts and good coffee), I don’t have any reason to...
Read moreGreat looking place inside and out. Very clean/nice server who seemed like she was part owner. Restrooms needed cleaning but that could’ve just happened. The base donuts were blueberry, plain and chocolate. I don’t like chocolate personally but these were pretty good. The blueberry ones taste the best. Better with icing but the plain blueberry is still decent. Didn’t like the plain original donut. Definitely get it with icing. The icing taste authentic and wasn’t too much. The donuts have a nice crispiness to them that is unique and they look unique and fair priced. They even have good coffee. They can put the icing on any donut base you like. Got 9 of them. I wish I would have gotten 8 with icing and one blueberry basic instead of so many basic ones as the icing was pretty good.Good variety, fresh, & specials on the weekend. Eat sweets sparingly people. I’d come back and...
