I ran into Al’s for the first time in Harvard Square not knowing what a lunch phenom it would become. This location in Boston is the veritable lunch sandwich Mecca for your choice of hot or cold subs, chips, and drinks. Even a small sub could feed a grown hairy man for 2 days. Lots of meat and lots of bread. While the subs are not a knock out, they pretty satisfying and heaps better than Jimmy Johns. What is the best about Al’s is that the cold and hot sandwiches have different lines. So it’s super efficient for those who need to get in and out. Yeah, it’s the ultimate in lunch stops. They’re friendly too, despite the pace. If you’re in the mood for a quick, satisfying sub that will feed two grown hairy men, there’s Al’s. If your drunk need to forget that last 24 hours, including what you ate, there’s Jimmy Johns.

Al’s Cafés is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, you feel the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile. The staff is friendly, attentive, and clearly takes pride in what they do. The food is outstanding—fresh, flavorful, and prepared with care. Every dish feels like it’s made with love, and the coffee is always perfectly brewed. The location at 179 Essex Street is convenient and has a cozy vibe, making it a perfect spot whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or sitting down for a relaxed meal. Prices are fair for the quality, and the portions are generous. If you’re looking for a place that combines great service, delicious food, and a comfortable setting, Al’s Cafés should be at the top of your list. Highly recommended—I’ll definitely be back!

One of the better "bang-for-your-buck" lunch spots in Downtown Boston. Great sandwiches, both hot and cold, for around $8. If you want to go here, try to go BEFORE 11:30. This place is fantastic AND cheap, therefore extremely popular. If you wander in at 12:30, get ready to stand in a big line. But even if you do get stuck in the line, they crank out sandwiches like you wouldn't believe, you won't be wanting too long. There are two sizes of sandwiches: small and large. You only need a small sandwich for lunch, it's plenty of food. The BBQ sandwich is great, as well as the chicken pesto. If you like buffalo chicken, you can't go wrong with the Ariana.

Steak and cheese the only sub I like from here. horrible service.

Called to place an order then was placed on hold for 15 minutes while I can hear the background noise of a busy shop. They never came back on the phone.

After arriving to the shop to order directly, I had quickly mentioned that I was on the phone holding with no one to return. A lady in her late 40’s to early 50s with dark glasses approaches me and tells me it was because they were busy without apologizing about the experience I had, trying to speak as if they are a victim to my complaint, while cashing in 300 orders from people like me working in downtown Boston. This made me a little upset and I quickly replied that they should just not pick up the phone if they are risking a person of being on hold and forgotten about. She grew upset and couldn’t really argue with me because I was completely justified in saying so.

After walking away to avoid any further quarrel, I glanced at her direction only to find her complaining to her manager about an “Asian kid” complaining.. this really pissed me off since I was the only Asian-American in the shop at the time.

After confronting the issue of her complaining to the manager, he then apologized for the experience.

This was seriously BS. No customer should have to argue with any employee when they submit a complaint. Simple. Let alone have to hear the employees talk and complain about the customer while they are standing in front of them.

Thanks ALs for the great experience during a busy work week when people are just trying to save time and...

I have worked next door or a while now and two times I ordered from there, Danielle at the register was nothing but rude. Did not listen to My order or write down what I said to her. The second time I came in thinking it would be a better experiance.. I got my sub and went to check before I took it back to work .. a guy manager approached me and asked what was wrong .. I explained last time it wasn't correct and I was just double checking bc the lady who takes your orders doesn't listen and is rude. As I'm leaving some Spanish girl "Kenny?" Was so RUDEEE then mumbled under her breath "if you don't like it then don't come here".. so I went back to my job and sat down opened my sub and honestly I didn't even want to eat it as much as I was craving it because she was so rude to me why would I ever want to put my hard-working money into a place where someone is that rude. Then when I was leaving there was two or three people behind the counter yelling at me… Real real professional !!! I went back and asked for my money back I will tell every one that honestly you can get cheaper better subs...

Yeah, no. Lived in this city my entire life, never tried this place, but always see it stuffed as I walk by consistently. Decided to give it a whirl yesterday. Really hard bringing myself to spend roughly $15 on a freaking Italian sub, small bag of chips, and a can of soda. All this is is Jersey Mike's with a different name. Both a rip off, both make solid subs and both are overrated. Not worth the price. Walk over to Chinatown and get 10 Dumplings for $6 instead. You won't regret it. Far superior and less than 1/2 the price. No brainer. Plus, seeing the owners response to somebody's comment on here, turned me off even further. You gave a guy 2 pieces of cold cuts and you're telling him how he should go about handling it? You guys never answer your phone anyways and you told him to call and you would have fixed it? Then blamed him for publicly embarrassing you guys? Are you serious? That sandwich you served publicly embarrassed you guys. Yeah, never again. It's only getting 2 stars because the sub itself was honestly pretty decent. Can't lie about that. Still...
