I had the Thai Fried rice with Tofu, the Ginger Chicken, and a Thai Ice Tea, at the end of their Lunch rush.
The Thai Fried Rice was lovely until I got towards the end, the tofu had been fried, so wasn't too soft and the rice had great flavor. It wasn't until I got to towards the end of the dish it was very salty. I am a clear my plate sort of girl, and I didn't do that here. It was food. I needed food. I wish the great flavor it started with continued throughout the plate. It is like someone salted half the plate with extra salt. I still ate. Verdict: OKAY
Ginger Chicken: This was disappointing. The chicken was dry and chewy, I thought the chicken would have been basted in ginger, but instead the dish is more brothy like than a sauce The mushrooms had more flavor than the chicken and they barely had flavor. Ginger was sliced into julienne pieces, but there weren't enough on the plate to make the ginger flavor consistent. The bites that had ginger were much better. Verdict: SKIP
Thai Tea: Rich with a beautiful color. DRINK THIS.
The atmosphere is amazing. Clean and peaceful. No loud blaring television. Windows that fully slide open, very clean, not cramped or crammed full of decoration, simple and welcoming. Someone clearly unhoused and addicted came in and the guy had to tell him that they charge for water but told him exactly where to go so he could get water on the same block.
Verdict: SKIP. Unsure if it was because they were preparing for dinner or what happened here, but I cannot recommend as both...
Read moreLet me start by saying that this used to be one of my favorite Thai restaurants in Boston. I would always get the penang curry (extra hot) or the green curry and it was always consistent. But I had a terrible experience recently and I don't know if I can return.
I don't know if they're falling on hard times, but the quality and service has gone down drastically. I went to Montien this last Saturday night and ordered one of my usuals, while my date ordered the beef drunken noodles. We started with some chicken satay which was incredibly sweet without any other flavor. The biggest disappointment was with the entrees; the drunken noodles were so sweet - it was almost like an attempt at a pad thai; the beef was tough and sweet as well. Even my typical favorite had too much sweetness to it. I don't know if they're trying to cater to different tastes or if there are new chefs working in the kitchen, but it's not working.
To add insult to injury, the service was absolutely horrible. Even in a restaurant with only three other patrons, I found myself waiting for more than 20 minutes to even get a check - I had to literally chase them down before they would serve me. When I tipped them poorly, the manager asked me what had happened and just as I was explaining he just waved his hand at me as if to say "get out of here". Well, that's a great way to treat a person that's been a loyal customer...I'll never...
Read moreLocated in Boston city in a busy part of town with a lot entertainment and places to hang out. Nice seating arrangements with a bar. Old school ambience with red wooden furniture theme. I order the crab anchovy papaya salad and regular papaya salad. I would definitely rank it as the top two best places to have papaya salad in north America from all the cities I have eaten in Canada and the US. The fish larb I order was beautiful played with entire fish deep fried. Fish was so well fried you could even eat the entire fish head like chips. All the bones cracked like chips. The dressing was isarn style larb sour spicy smoky with the roasted rice powder and salty all same time. Fish was fresh not frozen. I believe they used sea bass. I also has fried tilapia fillet with garlic. That was ok I wish they used the whole fish . The fish was definitely not frozen. The staff extremely polite. Owner very kind. We had Thai ice tea which was having a nice strong tea flavor. A lot of restaurants make it too milky and lighter color. Which I don't like. Menu is very well made hitting the classic Thai notes and having some unique dishes such as the Thai larb. This restaurant surprised me. It competes with some of the best restaurants in midtown NYC. It beats 90 percent of the restaurants in bay area. I have to give this one a 5. Please keep up good work and keep the standard high and please keep...
