Rumors is a cute little coffee shop located immediately on Elk Ave. The coffee shop also has an open floor-plan that allows you to walk right into their attached Townie Book Store, and if you need overflow seating, you can drink your coffee or tea in the bookstore as well. I usually am not one to stay in the coffeehouse as I will pick up my coffee and walk right back to my office to work for the day. My favorites here are pretty standard and predictable: Americano or dark roast drip coffee. During my "I-forgot-to-grocery-shop-and-need-my-caffeine-fix-asap" days I will usually rush in and use their self-serve station. I also love that you can get a re-fill for a dollar. Even though there is not technically a person helping you, if you're feeling in the generous spirit, I would recommend leaving that extra 50 cents or an extra dollar in the bin. The locals work hard and it's good karma. Also, bring your own mug, if you remember, to help cut down on waste, or pick up a cute re-usable one at their place. As I'm writing this review, we are entering full off-season mode here in Crested Butte, so maybe I will finally grab a cup of coffee and actually sit still and relax in the coffee shop instead of rushing out. Maybe I will...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've been an amateur (home) roaster and espresso connoisseur for decades. I've pulled shots on Rancilio, Gaggia and my current, Flair 58. I know my beans and espresso.
I was visiting CB and decided to do a coffee crawl of a few coffee houses that were recommended to me. From all of them, I ordered a cappuccino to evaluate how well the espresso cut through the milk and the froth quality.
Rumors fell in the middle for coffee flavor and quality. I could barely taste the espresso in my capp. But the froth quality was decent and, overall, it was definitely drinkable. Just didn't "wow" me.
One slight disappointment was that I asked for my capp in a ceramic mug with latte art. I was told neither was possible. I get that not everyone is skilled in latte art, but there were rows and rows of mugs on the shelf behind the counter.
Bonus points for the wall art, bookstore and patio seating - all of which I enjoyed. I also bought two mugs that were very creative and amusing. So I ended up spending ~$30US in the place, which I don't mind. I just wish they would have made the effort to serve my coffee in a mug and used a more robust bean and/or roast in their...

Mediocre. The coffee and pastries etc. are fine. Good tea selection. Lovely outdoor seating. The book store next door and the cute art makes it a worthwhile stopā¦. Unless youāre not a local. CB is meaningful to people who donāt live here year round, and some of us who visit frequently help boost the economy, not just during peak colors but random Tuesdays throughout the year in general- because we love to play here, too. The snobby remarks from behind the counter about out-of-towners today also doesnāt add up with a brand thatās trying to be āinclusiveā and āfor the peopleā. Bummer for you. Letting you know you missed the mark today and there was only a line of 4 customers. If you claim to be inclusive, you should be so. More than anything, I just feel sad for people like this and I would rather support businesses who are happy to serve strangers and friends alike- people who are thankful for the business. We left with a bad taste in our mouth. There are other...
