I've been to this place numerous times. I used to enjoy it a lot and it has a good menu with decent food. But my most recent experience was horrific. We sat at a table close to the stairs entrance facing McKinney Ave. There's a garbage can next to the table. Well one of the guys clearing off the table threw drinks into this garbage and hit the rim causing beer and drinks to fly over me and one of my friends. To his credit he apologized but never offered to get us a towel not did he offer some compensation, a drink on the house? To add insult to injury, the bartenders turned off the water misting fan system. I asked our waitress about it and apparently one table requested them off while the rest of us were hot and uncomfortable. Oh, and when they turn off the misters and the fans at the same time guess what happens, the mist nozzles started dripping water all over us. I notified the waitress Michelle. I asked her to turn them back on and that we were hot and getting dripped on. Her response, I'll ask the bartenders hee hee. And never came back to address the issue. No i'm sorry, no i'll fix it, no let me get you a drink on the house. Several times a man who appeared to be a roaming manager? walked past us a few times, smiled and waved briefly but never addressed us or made it know he's the manager, never asked us if all was ok....because it wasn't! and went on his merry way to his patio perch. We were pissed off and reluctantly paid the bill and left earlier than planned. I don't think we'll be frequenting this place any longer. Too bad because we really do like the food and late night hours but this kind of indifferent and unprofessional service is completely unacceptable. I hope the owner reads his reviews because this former favorite of ours is quickly...

My friend and I went yesterday, ate, and had a drink. We asked our waitress for some water after she said she'd bring us some. We knew the place was busy so we let it go. We asked her a total of four times, and she said the bus boy should have brought it but they're not always "reliable". We said it was fine, she said it'd be right out. We did get our water, and she came back later to check on us and proceeded to say in a condescending tone, "I just wanted to make sure the little Mexican brought you the water". My friend and I were dumbfounded, but didn't say anything to her. Not sure if she missed the fact that we were BOTH Mexican, or if she literally just said it to say it? We were both quite offended, because it just makes you wonder how they do treat the "little Mexicans" in the kitchen. Everybody deserves respect, we are all people. We proceeded to leave her a thoughtful note and a decent tip, and then find her manager. In no way was it okay, or was her joke funny, because her manager says she says things to get a laugh. Maybe we were offended because it was a direct offense to our culture/heritage/ethnicity, and maybe it would have been funny to a different table, but it shouldn't be funny or considered a joke. Besides that incident, we love BFP, but it'll make us think twice next time we go there, or at least make sure that EJ isn't...
Read moreBuilt from a sprawling five bedroom house which was later converted into offices, I found much to admire wherever I looked. The front patio is a wonder of distressed woods, the staircase to the upper bar starkly beautiful in a industrial metallic style. Inside has lots more wooden constructs of note, most notably the back bar. According to my bartender the dark wood, Byzantine-looking creation came from a castle in Scotland owned by Pete Townsend who donated it to the Dallas Hard Rock Cafe. When that property was purchased for development the owners of Blackfriar purchased the back bar and installed it. It is impressive.
I've been to Blackfriar twice and both times the food has been very good to excellent. This last time I tried the Chipotle Avocado Chicken Sandwich. The fries were cooked to perfection, nice and crunchy on the outside and tender and moist on the inside. The chicken patty itself was almost too big, as chunks of chicken fell on my plate as I ate. Amazingly, the same thing happened with the avocado. I mean, who ever gets too much avocado on their sandwich?! Seriously.
The beer selection is good but not great. I drink the Easy Peasy IPA on draft, one of my favorites. Highly recommended.
The two bartenders who have served me were both very friendly, professional, attentive and prompt. What more can you ask?
EDIT The fish...
