This is not the most fair review but if I was the manager I’d want to know about this event. We’re from Florida and have just gotten in to Flagstaff after leaving Tucson. It’s a Sunday evening around six and we’re trying to find a great place to eat in the area though most of downtown seems to be closed which Is not unusual for a small town on Sunday night. We managed to find our way to this hotel restaurant after a bit of googling while sitting in the town square and are greeted promptly by a female hostess asking if we want to come in and have some drinks and watch the game. I mention that we need to grab some food and ask if they are serving and she says unfortunately no. I say that we need to get some food first but that we might stop back by after dinner. My wife chimes in about us being from Florida and that we’ve just gotten into town and that we’re struggling to find a place open to grab a bite to eat. The waitress responds that it’s tough on Sunday night in flagstaff and I ask if she has any suggestions for something good to eat. She tells us another restaurant (leaving intentionally unnamed) that she says serves until midnight every night and says, “it is (pause) magical.” She also tells us that she goes there often after finishing her shift at this restaurant. I respond with a follow up question, “what kind of food is it?” and she oddly has an attitude change saying, “What do you expect me to know a second restaurant’s menu? You can Google it.” I was confused and responded that you said you eat there often but left it at that and grabbed my phone to check out Google.
It was a really strange change of courtesy and kindness and, though the hotel restaurant and sister bar looked like cool spots to check out, I’m not sure I’d come back to this place with the odd, seemingly underserved treatment we received. It was just really confusing overall. I didn’t think we overstepped our questions based on her initial response to us but it… it was just weird.
Again, this is not the most fair review of the restaurant which looks amazing in the photos but the waitress/ hostess that first greeted us warmly and then acted like we were annoying her seconds later definitely soured any desire for us to check this place out while we’re in town.
I’m hoping it was just an off night but first impressions are everything for out of owners which seem to be a staple of patrons in the area. If this was my business, I’d want to know...
Read moreWe stopped at the Flagstaff Visitor Center and inquired about a good place for breakfast and the lady recommended Charly's. It was just a short walk off of the main street.
I was immediately impressed by the historic building. Let me begin by saying, old buildings fascinate me. Restored historic buildings are on the top of my list and the Weatherford Hotel is amazing.
Back to Charly's......The outside seating was filled up so we went in and were seated, by a very nice young lady, in the center dining room. Our server, Ben, was very attentive and prompt. Our drinks came quickly as did our breakfast. We both ordered the $8.00 "traditional" breakfast of eggs and hash browns and toast. I got the additional $2.00 bacon. The eggs were done to order and the portions were more than adequate. The bacon was crisp as ordered. They had no white toast so we ordered the wheat toast. Slices were rather thick but good. Only problem was they were dry. No butter. Not sure if that was normal. Didn't ask, just loaded up on the jelly. Food was very good and Ben's service was excellent.
The atmosphere in the old building was fantastic. After eating we wandered through the building taking photographs. That was the highlight of my whole experience. The people who restored this building did an extraordinary job.
We will definitely go back again when we are...
Read moreWe arrived shortly after 5 p.m. and seated immediately. It took over twenty minutes to talk to our waiter. The "manager" stick his head in and leaned on the bat to look things over but did not offer to get is drinks or anything. Service with the waiter was erratic throughout the dinner but he was hustling. We were ready to order. I ordered soup and the prime rib. She ordered posole as an appetizer and the Navajo taco for dinner. My soup arrived relatively quickly but hers arrived later with the dinner. I ordered the prime rib rate and it came out very rare. Considered sending it back to warm it up a bit but the waiter never came back. He took my soda glad for a refill but never came back with it. There was supposed to be bread with my dinner but it never arrived.
The posole was very tasty but a small serving for the price. The Navajo taco was bland but not bad. My dinner was pretty good. The Cole slaw was very good, the fries were also very good. The broccoli was very al dente. The prime rib tasted pretty good but really tough and there was no steak knife supplied.
At the end, the manager came over and asked how everything was. When we started in on some of the issues he was clueless but professional. He offered nothing more than an apology and blamed the waiter for the issues.
A disappointing way to end the first day of...
