Taquería Machetes — Restaurant in Fredericksburg

I have no idea how this establishment could possibly have a 4.9 star rating (I ate there tonight because of their high ratings on google). Firstly, this is not a restaurant, it is a fast food place. There is no service, you walk to the window and order and then walk to the window to pick up your food once your buzzer rings. Secondly, the dining area is full of flies (a lot of flies). I ordered the street tacos (brisket meat - which was a mistake) as well as chips and salsa. The meat was dry (I should have known better than to order this). The tortilla chips were not fresh and had about the same quality as you would find with a bag of tortilla chips purchased at a gas station. On the good side, the salsa was good (I had the red spicy salsa) and the pan fried onions on the plate were also good. I rate the tacos as well below average and the tortilla chips the same. Because of all of the flies in this establishment, I rate the atmosphere well below average (quite frankly, I think it is unhealthy). Finally, when you order food and pay (before coming to pick up your food yourself), their machine asks you to pay a tip of 18%, 20% or 25%, however, there is zero service at this establishment. I was not expecting a lot when looking for a quick snack while barhopping in Fredericksburg. My girlfriend and I ordered the Papas Machetes with the carnitas. I was expecting conventionally mildly chewy pulled pork with mashed potatoes… instead I was treated to one of the best meals I have ever had. I say this without exaggeration. I’ve lived in Texas in California for over 10 years and I’ve tried Countless Mexican restaurants, and traveled to over 30 countries and have yet to be as pleasantly surprised by a dish as I was tonight. The tortillas were cooled and greased to perfection, the carnitas was melt in mouth buttery without being fatty, and the mashed potatoes were pure decadence. Added all together with the guacamole and salsas this dish allowed us to create morsels within the tortillas that few if any other dishes can compare to.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Taqueria Machete, and I can confidently say it was an outstanding experience! The tacos were absolutely delicious—each bite was bursting with authentic flavors, reminiscent of true Mexican street tacos. You can tell they take great care in preparing their food with fresh ingredients and traditional recipes.
