We went there with friends on our first trip to Fredericksburg. The meal was like Sisco truck delivered meats pre sliced and cooked and that they probably just reheat it in a microwave with a sauce over it. The potato salad had a strange flavor (may just be the German way) and the cabbage overkill with clove ingredient (also may just be the German way and nothing wrong). Anyway she brought 'free' cake to make up for it....and hubby that (who is NOT picky at all about his food) went to split it with me and stopped after one bite. I went on to eat it by covering it with whipped cream that was on the plate and strawberry syrup, not knowing anything was wrong with it. When I stopped putting the whipped cream and syrup on it realized it was extremely freezer burned so badly I had to spit it out. We just left and I got sick at my stomach 'bad' so we had to cut our night short and head back to our bed and breakfast 18 miles out in the country :-(.. I think if it had not been for her serving us such severely freezer burnt cake, I'd actually have considered giving it another try on another trip thinking surely she didn't know about the cake? Oh and they don't take certain CC's, so was forced to use one I didn't want to use, and also we paid a $50 tab for two people (our share) that felt like we ate packaged food with spoiled old stale freezer burnt cake for dessert.....was hard to pay for it...seriously. I don't like to complain about anyone or thing, and she seemed so sweet but couldn't understand how she couldn't know about that cake being SO freezer burned, it must have been very old to taste that strong of it. If she was putting on an innocent sweet act, it fooled us because we really liked her. The servings are very small too....our meals were 17 each for what the customer receives PLUS the teas and tip, the meal should have been no more than 8 to 10 each max to include a non freezer burned dessert and that's pushing it. I'd like to see this little place stay in business, maybe they just had an 'off' night or something?. My friend has eaten there a few times and never had a complaint but she's also shy. My husband who is the world's least food critic was very unhappy with the food. She was really super nice, hope it wasn't all just a front and they knew all along what they were serving...would hate to think that of her but if she is the manager, she needs to check her stock better and begin serving larger portions and/or charging less and get a new CC system as well to offer convenience to her customers. Shame to post something not favorable :-(....I usually only post something if I have a rave review, but this was $50 bucks of our hard earned money totally wasted and I'd have preferred not to have eaten the free freezer burned cake :-(. I hope they straighten up their game...she really seemed so nice...

Went there on a quiet Monday night with my family (wife, 3 and 1 yr old). Welcome and seating (presumably by the German owner)was not very friendly to say the least. Waitress was a young girl who gave the impression to be lost and wasn't behaving very professionally ("sorry I can't reach around...." placing 4 waters (no kids cups) on one corner of the table). We ordered Wiener Schnitzel, Sauerbraten and the only kids dish on the menu, half a portion of Spaghetti. The Schnitzel was pork, which a dish named Wiener Schnitzel clearly isn't supposed to be. It should be veal. The Schnitzel came with red cabbage, very tasty, and potato salad, which was ok. The Sauerbraten was bland and served with a HUGE piece of kale (uncooked and for decoration only) which helped cover the vast empty spaces on the plate. Portion was medium sized at best. Spaghetti were decent but could have used more seasoning. All food was served on (re-usable) plastic plates and bowls. Water was served in plastic cups! The beer menu is crazy, but not in a good way, as German beers are priced between 8 and 9,95 USD per bottle/glass. Yes it is 16oz but at this price you normally get half a case wholesale !!! Also, they only had 2 types of beer left from a total of 8- 10 beers.

Overall it seems that the owner and staff clearly live off the reviews and the fact that people are drawn into this place because of the location on Main Street Fredericksburg. Ambience, friendliness and plates clearly do not match the menu prices in this place. Owners should remember that there is plenty of competition around.

Last comment: we are Germans and know what German Gemütlichkeit means (this is what is advertised on the website of Der Lindenbaum). This place clearly has nothing to do with coziness and being welcoming...

My husband and I decided to visit Fredericksburg for our 17th anniversary. We initially planed on going to another restaurant. With one look across the street we could see that it would have been a terribly long wait and I wouldn't have been able to hold up for it due to the fact that I had back surgery a few months ago and was still in pain. Once we got over the disappointment on not being able to go to the places we had planned out, we decided to see if there was a restaurant on the side of the road we were on. This is how we noticed this wonderful gem of a restaurant. We were greeted and seated immediately. Yes, we were told that they did not accept Visa or MasterCard. Personally I'm very glad that we were told that up front instead of being surprised when the bill arrived. I really loved our waitress. She helped me decide what to order because, quite frankly, I wanted everything! The food came out piping hot and fresh. It was absolutely perfect! It really took me back to when I lived in Germany...I'm an Air Force brat lol. My husband and I had a few bites of each others meals and now I want to go back and get what he ordered! There was just enough food selections on the menu. If they had had a huge selection I would have gotten really overwhelmed. So overall we had an amazing anniversary lunch. I'm glad our plans didn't work out. Because of Der Lindenbaum we had a fantastic day! It was really wonderful to get out of town (San Antonio) with each other. We plan on making the drive again very soon so we can sample more...

After asking several locals for a good German restaurant, we were repeatedly recommended The Lindenbaum as the most “authentic” option in town. As a German myself, I had high expectations, but unfortunately, I left somewhat disappointed. One of my biggest issues was the “Wiener Schnitzel” on the menu. Traditionally, Wiener Schnitzel is made with veal, but here, it was only pork. In Germany, that would be called “Schnitzel Wiener Art” to differentiate it, and I wish the restaurant labeled it correctly. It’s hard to get Wiener schnitzel so I was super excited… That being said, the schnitzel itself was well-prepared and tasty, but I was expecting to eat a real Wiener Schnitzel. The potato salad was another letdown. What was served was not a typical German potato salad but rather mashed potatoes with bacon (Kartoffelpüree mit Speck). While it tasted fine, it was far from what one would expect if looking for a true German-style potato salad. Overall, while the food was decent, it didn’t quite meet the authentic German experience I was hoping for. If you’re just looking for a casual meal with German-inspired dishes, it might still be worth a visit, but if you’re seeking true authenticity, you may be disappointed.

Searched this online under the official Fredericksburg tourist website on places to go. The building looks nice and all but the service and food are bad. I would not come back for sure. First, we entered and no one approach us at all. One server saw us but went to clean up tables instead? There were clean tables to bring us to, but no she didn't. Then after waiting for like an awkward time, another server came to guide us to the table and that server who didn't come up to us previously, whisper to me and said "we prefer no mask". I was slightly mad and said "oh", inside me I was wondering if that was the reason she ignored us? hello, we are in covid period, I don't want to die? Didn't really feel like staying in this restaurant but since my husband drove 1 hour down here, and it was so hot outside, we decided not to change place. Then we ordered snitzel, and it didnt event taste good. I have been to Germany before and this is just not the real deal. The mashed potatoes were instant as we could still see some remnant of uncooked one around. I mean I would really want to give a 0% tip if I could but we still give the 15%, just to get the economy going -.- . If I could give zero star. I would.

I was born and raised in Germany. Lindenbaum offers authentic German food, so eating there is a must when visiting Fredericksburg! We had the classic schnitzel and "Ungarischer Gulasch" (Hungarian goulash). I grew up eating these dishes and loved them. I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures lol Anyway, the schnitzel is made with pork, pan fried and served with lemon. All three facts make it authentic and super delicious :) The red cabbage was slightly sweet and cooked with gloves. Super yummy! The goulash was tender and flavorful. We also ordered the bread. It is not as dense and heavy (literally) as German bread. This is a good move in the US because you don't have to get used to a different texture. The taste reminded me a lot of German caraway bread! We had seconds, because they even offer free bread refills. Besides imported regular German beer, they also offered a non-alcoholic one. Most of the staff seem to have been born in Germany. Regardless, they all spoke German and were super nice :) It's a rustic & cute place. If you want to feel like you are eating an authentic meal, just like people in Germany would, you should definitely go to Lindenbaum!
