The food was below average. Ordered the sampler with various sausages and they all taste so dry and hard except the white one. The service was particularly bad. Waited half hour for a table which is normal at busy places. However, we waited another 15 mins before a server came to our table asking what drinks we wanted to order, I said just water and we are ready to order and she said to wait and went to another table. So I guess she just drinks order (were you wondering why the wait is so long?!) 5 mins later, a guy came to take our order and also the table next to us. After another long wait, he finally brought our food without any utensils. He brought the food to the next table and didn't forget to bring the utensils, but still didn't bring us any utensils. Then we had to wait for a few minutes to catch him and ask for the utensils. While we were eating, he came by the next table a few times, chatted with friendly and just briefly turned to our table "is everything good" and ready to leave. You can feel the difference! Now after we finished the food, it came the most ridiculous part. My daughter ordered a dessert along with the food, since we already finished the food and waited quite a few minutes already and there were still other people waiting for tables. When he showed up, I asked whether our desert was ready. He started to spell out all the deserts they have and I said actually we already ordered the desert with a normal conversational voice. Out of nowhere he said "Calm down". Come on, what's the matter with you?

Btw the dessert was so terrible and we didn't finish half of it.

I left with only slightly less than 10% tip, the lowest amount is ever gave in my entire life and when I left the restaurant I immediately regretted that I still gave them $5 for the worst service in ever experienced.

My take is if you are Asian or other minorities, don't come...

We decided to give this place a go and definitely wish we would of spent our money elsewhere. On arrival, we were not greeted and stood to be seated for a good 10 minutes. Then some lady about 10 feet away kept yelling TWO and pointed towards the back. We were just so confused. We were not even sure what table to sit at until a wait staff pointed to a our table. Our waiter was nice and attentive though. So my husband is a food fanatic. He was anxious to try this place. He knew exactly what he wanted. He ordered Oak house Eggs and I ordered the Huevos rancheros. My husband ate some and stopped. I just thought he was full. I continued to eat mine and honestly it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. Not a dish I would order again. I couldn't even see anything because it was covered with cheese. What a missed opportunity to display delicious ingredients. Anyway the food was more cold than hot. I didn't even eat my potatoes because they were that cold. Since my dish wasn't satisfying I took a bite of my husband's Oak house Eggs. Ohhh mann big mistake! I have never in my adult life spat out food. The beef tenderloin must of gone bad. It tasted sooooo gamey. It was disgusting. Yuck 🤮. Then my husband said, " Yeah I spat mine out too but didn't want to ruin your experience if your food was good." This place was a total disappointment. I could see the owner busting her behind around the restaurant. But honestly I think that energy needs to be spent expediting in the kitchen and over seeing the quality of the food that is...

I would suggest eating elsewhere. In my opinion, the atmosphere is unfriendly, and the food is subpar.

The staff were unfriendly to us from the moment that we arrived to the moment that we left. Our party consisted of 5 people, which apparently is a logistical nightmare for this restaurant as the staff verbally groaned and complained about having to seat 5 people. During the duration of our meal, the staff was observed to complain nearly every time a new customer or party entered the restaurant, almost as if the staff was upset that people actually wanted to dine there.

The food itself was served lukewarm, which incidentally, was the same temperature as the beer that I had ordered. Lukewarm food. Lukewarm beer. Yuck!

As we were leaving, I asked the staff if they happened to have an elevator to get back upstairs (the restaurant is located in a basement), as we were traveling with my mother-in-law who is getting up there in age. The staff ignored me the first time I asked. So I asked again. The staff angrily replied, "No!" And then proceeded to ignore me again. I am not sure why the staff was rude to us as our party was courteous throughout the meal. We were just asking for help for an elderly lady.

We tipped 15% because we're not barbarians, but I have to tell you, I was very tempted to not tip as the entire experience was not something that I would ever pay money for again. It's too bad because I had previously dined here a few years ago, and we really enjoyed this restaurant. I would not advise anyone...

While visiting I noticed the menu had shrimp. Me not in the mood for German food decided something else would have to tickle my fancy. The restaurant from the main street is located down some stairs underground, which intrigued me and created mystery as I walked down. Once inside it was pretty basic with limited seating especially for large groups. You can also peer into the kitchen from most seating as it is close by leaving you hearing the cook staff. I ordered the Texas Gulf shrimp plate, priced reasonably for what it is and being Fredericksburg. The creamy cole slaw was delicious if you are into that sort of thing. Shrimp was cooked perfectly, and both the fries and shrimp were yummy dipped in the Creole sauce. However, beware if you would need to get another sauce because I was charged a dollar for an additional to dip my Shrimp and fries into. After lunch I was curious about dessert. The waitress recommended the Peach Bread Pudding stating it was the most ordered item amongst patrons. When it arrived I was hopeful, but upon the first bite of peach, bread pudding, and the cool whip or whipped topping I was less delighted. I have had way better Bread pudding in other locations and was not particularly happy with the taste. The wait staff was attentive and courteous upon arrival and during my lunch leaving me no empty glass. Overall, I would come back for the Shrimp, but I would try a different dessert. Happy Travels and Enjoy

I had traveled here to see about how “German” this town was. I was rather disappointed to be honest. I was hoping the Rathskeller would have some authentic German food but disappointed in the selection of what was available. Having just Bratwurst, Knochwurst and Schnitzel and just average Americanized food for the rest of the menu was sad. I miss having German food back in Germany. My Knochwurst was yummy and the Bratwurst was... okay... The German potato salad seemed a little off but I guess that’s because of there being so many recipes for it obviously but it didn’t have anything to make it very rememberable I feel. The sauerkraut was decent as well. Not horrible and not amazing. I was a little confused on the random lettuce and pieces of red onion on the side too. The spicy mustard was potent but the description on the menu did not say anything about to expect a spicy or sweeter mustard so it was a bit of a surprise and may turn off someone if they do not like spicy. (Horseradish) Well. My quest continues trying to look for somewhere truly authentic. This town is full of a bunch of cowboy Texas clothes, cheap boutiques with poorly made clothes and cheap earrings, and random shops. It’s like there may have been more German influence at some point but everything feels tainted. Ich werde nicht wiederkommen. :/

For someone who had never been to Fredricksburg before, Rathskeller has earned its spot as the crown jewel of my trip. Its always great when your hunger optimizes the sensitivity of your nose and it guides you to a restaurant that makes you feel you were meant to find. It was just how I found this little eatery, and finding it was not as easy as you would think. Its very easy for their entrayway and sign to avoid detection as this place is located below street level in the basement of a building with some interesting history to it. As typical of a tourist, I kept scanning the area knowing that they had to be a restaurant nearby given the delicious aromas floating around till I saw their sign with the arrow pointing to a stairway leading into a basement as thier entrance. That was the only thing DOWN about Rathskeller. Everything else about the visit was a total thumbs up. Great and fast service, decent decor, welcoming and warm ambience, the drinks came in quick, recomendations from our waitress was great. The food was plated well, tasted even better, priced fairly and well received by my hungry belly. I would definately recommend Rathskeller as a place to visit when in Fredericksburg.
