Where has Steven been all my life? I walked into Waffle House this morning just looking for breakfast and walked out having found my spirit animal.
Waffle House was my very first job back in the late ’80s (yes, the 1900s). It was a gig that required multi-tasking, sharp wit, and a memory like steel — all while a dozen sets of eyeballs watched you do it. That’s why the Steps of Service mattered. There were ten back then, and if you followed them, everything flowed: happy customers, smoother shifts, easier job.
Over the years, periodically dipping into a WH, I’ve never seen anyone actually do them. I always left wondering, “Why not just stick to the Waffle House way? Joe and Tom figured it out.”
And then along came Steven.
This guy worked the floor like a hip-hop step dancer — precise, smooth, effortless. He greeted me within two minutes of arrival and had my to-go order rolling immediately. He priced my order in his head as he wrote it down, slid toward the register with a silent nudge to pay now (genius rule for to-go orders — no wasted food, no waiting around), and sent me on my way with hot food in hand.
In the meantime, I slipped into the restroom. Spotless. Hands-down the cleanest Waffle House bathroom I’ve ever seen.
By the time I got back, Steven had already greeted and taken several more orders, repeated them for the cook, joked about being tired but kept the entire house humming — all without missing a beat. My food? Perfect. Packed perfectly. Every silverware and condiment accounted for.
No chaos. No bickering. No angry customers in sight. Just Good Food Fast.
For God’s sake, someone get this upper-manager-in-a-server’s-body into the role he was born for. He’s got what it takes to pass the real Waffle House way down to everyone who comes after him.
Because Steven isn’t just working a shift. He’s keeping the Waffle House soul alive — right there in...

Now to the bad... I walked in this morning during their shift change. I understand wait times will be a little longer... However what I experienced was beyond unacceptable. I walk in and the cook like always greeted me and welcomed me back. I sat at the normal spot I at the counter. Then sat and sat. No one else greeted me or acknowledge me. Then a group of three, about 7 mins after I been sitting, sat at the counter next to me. And within a minute they were greeted by a waitress then offered drinks...
I was upset so I as I got up I just said I will take my business else where.. Then the other waitresses had the audacity to say well we are going through shift change. I advised as walking out a simple hello or drink would of been fine... Then left...
Now I was completely ignored. This is not the first time, I had a bad experience here. The last time i was here i asked for ham in my hashbrowns to be told we are currently out. Then no sooner than i get my plate another customer ordered ham to the same waitress and low and behold it was available less than an 5 mins after I ordered it...
I tried to overlook it, but figured give it another shot. But sadly this was the outcome today on this...
I doubt there will be a third time, and said thing is, this was a place i would either take my crew of 20 and buy breakfast or get carry out...
Guess I'll have to take them elsewhere to reward them for their...
Read moreNever been to a WaffleHouse before and probably wont ever go back. First we had to wait, which was fine because let's face it, it was breakfast time at a breakfast joint. Then once we actually were able to sit the dirty dishes were there from the last people, which again ok but they sat there for at least 10 minutes THEN our waitress finally made it down to pick up the dishes, nothing else was said to us and she started taking people's orders that were seated way after us. I finally had to ask another waitress if we were just suppose to let them know when we were ready to order because we have been sitting waiting for over 10 minutes with no communication from anyone, not even for drinks. She said yes, your waitress is down there she'll get this way and kinda gave I'm an "I'm sorry" look. One of the other waitresses finally was like if you want to sit in my section over here I can wait on you. It was just frustrating, seemed very unorganized and the food was ok. Wasn't very impressed at all with the Goodlettsville, TN...
