Roman's Famous Meats & Seafood — Restaurant in Honesdale

I was staying in honesdale and had looked online at the various businesses. I was exited to discover Roman's especially the diversity of smoked fish they had. I was a bit surprised that everything was frozen. The woman behind the counter seemed a bit odd when I was asking about it. But despite my reservations I bought a smoked Mackerel from Canada. Anyway, I ate some of it with bagels from Camp Umppy's down the street (great bagels and really nice people there!). I woke up with cramps and diarrhea and was sick all night long. The symptoms were consistent with histamine fish poisoning indicating that the fish hadn't been properly stored. This seriously is dangerous. I was considering going back there and gently pointing it out to them without any accusations or threats but just so maybe they'd toss out their stock and take better care in the future but I read some of the bad reviews on here and thought perhaps that wouldn't do any good and there could really be a bad situation. I called ahead to ask if they had wild-caught salmon and was told yes. When I got there, Roman showed me a sad-looking piece of salmon and assured me it was wild. He mentioned it was Faroe Island salmon, and only after I left and googled it did I realize it’s actually farm-raised. I asked multiple times for wild and was still misled. I also asked for a smaller cut without the tail, but he pressured me, saying the fish was a “good price” so I should just take more. In the end, we didn’t eat it — I fed it to some cats.

We also bought a frozen “grass-fed” flank steak, which smelled rotten after defrosting and went straight in the trash. This isn’t the first time I’ve had issues here — no expiration dates on the frozen meat, and I’ve seen him try to pass off regular beef as grass-fed.

Between the dishonesty, lack of transparency, and questionable quality, I don’t trust Roman at all. Shop here only if you’re okay with...

Very pricey. This was our second and last time there. I called to place and order for some chop meat. When we picked up the meat, the piece was outrageous and the customer service was horrible. The husband ans wife (owners) were very nasty and unprofessional. My boyfriend paid $135 for a few pounds of chop meat and 2 packs of sausage. I called right after just to ask what they charge per pound because I thought that it was a bit much. The wife basically told me they were busy and to call back in a few days. I had asked to speak to the husband and she said with a nasty attitude to call back after the weekend because they had now time and hang up on me.
