OMG I found a piece of Japan in Waikiki! This little nook is located on Kuhio by Marukame Udon. There's no parking unless you find street parking, walk from another parking lot or do a drive by as in get dropped off and the other person circles back to pick you up! The women there work really hard and are really nice. If it's crowded, orders can get backed up so please be patient with them.

This place makes you feel like you are back in Japan! It's a simple menu basically made up of matcha or hojicha drinks and matcha and vanilla soft serve! This is NOT like McDonald's soft serve. This green tea soft serve has a strong matcha taste so it's more on the less sweet and bitter side; it isn't the creamy matcha type.

So if you don't like matcha, this is not the place for you. I love matcha so I think it's delicious. The vanilla soft serve is also pretty amazing, it has a buttery smooth taste. I've tried almost everything on the menu, except for the frappes. They have one parfait, the Maiko Special which was good but I prefer simpler desserts and this one had too many different things in it. My personal favorite here is the floats, I've had matcha and hojicha. But I really like the matcha tea with either matcha flavor or vanilla flavor soft serve depending how matcha I'm craving matcha!

There's not other soft serve like this in Hawaii. It's almost as good as Japan!

As a matcha enthusiast, I was thrilled to discover Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko, a haven for all things matcha. My recent visit exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to share my delightful experience with you!

Matcha Ice Cream: The matcha ice cream was sublime! The smooth, creamy texture perfectly balanced the rich, vibrant green tea flavor. It was like tasting a sweet, frozen piece of Japan.

Maiko Special: The Maiko Special, a signature drink, stole the show. This work of art combined expertly whisked matcha powder with velvety milk, creating a harmonious blend of bitter and sweet notes. Each sip transported me to a serene Japanese garden.

Authenticity: What impressed me most was the cafe's commitment to authenticity. The matcha used is directly sourced from Japan, ensuring the highest quality and flavor. The owners' attention to detail and passion for matcha culture shine through in every aspect of the cafe.

Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko is a must-visit for anyone who loves matcha or wants to experience authentic Japanese culture. The matcha ice cream and Maiko Special are standouts, and the cafe's dedication to quality and authenticity is evident in every aspect. I'll be back soon to indulge in this little piece of...

We love anything matcha thus were we're thrilled when we found out about Maiko.

Given our busy schedule, it was unfortunate that we could only visit this place the day before our departure and we deeply regret that we did not make time to visit this place earlier so we could come back to it before the end of our vacation.

We ordered the Maiko signature cup, I think that's what it was called. It has matcha cake, ice cream and some other desserts which we LOVED.

The other thing that stood out to us was that the payment system they used had no tipping option. Unlike many other places where you are presented with a screen with tipping options after they hand you just a cup of coffee, and the tip usually starts with 15%, Maiko has no tipping screen. I personally dislike the American tipping culture so that was a big plus for me. I'm willing to pay extra, even have the tip baked into the price, just don't ask me to tip 15-20% for handing me a drink.

Anyways, I would definitely recommend you to...

Edit, Dec 2024: We had a matcha soft serve on a cone this visit. Ube and peach were the seasonal flavors available, though almost everyone ordered matcha. Original, 2023: Amazingly creamy, lightly bitter matcha soft serve! We ordered a matcha shave ice with matcha soft serve to share between 2 adults. Plenty of dessert to go around. Ice was a tad chunky and crunchy, not super fine. 3 mochi balls and 1 chestnut A scoop of sweetened red beans The soft serve was swirled and more matcha powder was sprinkled on top This matcha shave ice is winning against my previous favorite at Uncle Clay's HOPA. First week of March 2023: special flavors are Ube and Sakura (Cherry Blossoms), which can be swirled together. I would like to try the Ube next time. Sakura sounds pretty good, but Matcha will likely be the favored choice each time. Staff were extremely polite and pleasant. Shop doesn't accept cash, you must use a credit card or your phone (payment via Square).

Do NOT go here. They market themselves like some kind of matcha specialty spot, but the drink was honestly terrible — bland, watery, and not even close to what I expected from a place claiming to know matcha. Complete waste of time and money. And don’t even get me started on the service. My drink came out leaking everywhere even though the lid was on. When I pointed it out, she just said, “It’s okay, it melts fast.” Then wiped both the table and my cup and the lid with the same filthy rag. The matcha kept dripping, so she wrapped it in a paper towel — and had the nerve to tell me, “Just drink it fast so it won’t spill.” I wish I were joking. The two customers before me had no issues. I really don’t want to believe it was racism, but the way I was treated made me question it. It felt personal, and not in a good way. This place is all hype, zero quality — both in taste and in basic human decency.
