I have been a customer since almost a year ago when Scale started at the Jersey City farmer's markets. There was no reason to buy seafood anyplace else once I found Tony and his crew. They have stood the test of time.
The quality and freshness of the seafood offered is astounding - this is because they deal directly with the Fulton Fish Market and local dayboats. On top of that, Tony (a culinary arts trained and experienced chef) will give you simple and complete instructions on how to maintain and cook everything he sells. I have started to cook a dozen types of seafood I was always too afraid to do myself before (clams, mussels, oysters, whole fish, uni, etc).
Besides the store on Coles St and the farmer's market, Scale will also DELIVER to your house. You can contact them anytime to see what they have and/or arrange for special items.
There is also a growing range of prepared foods. Best I have ever had rating goes to their house smoked salmon, cocktail and mignonette sauces, and baked clams with Tony's homemade chorizo!

Read moreLunch review only, as I have yet to actually purchase fresh seafood from this fishmonger:
Get the Ahi Tuna Crudo if you want plump juicy pieces marinated in a lightly sweetened soy sauce. I would've preferred no sugar, but the quality of everything else was on point. The Lobster Roll was loaded with plump chunks of lobster, tons of fresh dill, and just enough mayo to lubricate everything without drowning it.
But the Crab Cake Sandwich. Jimminy wow-lickers! Easily one of the best crab cakes I've ever had: loaded with fresh crab meat and very little filler (our server said it was ~80% vs. 20%), perfectly baked so that it was lightly crispy on the outside, and sandwiched between two pillowy soft brioche buns. This is the sandwich to get.
The only drawback of this place is how high the prices are. A lobster roll, for example, is $32. As a former Bostonian who lived there during the heyday of $15 lobster rolls, the prices make me want to wither and die. But my desire for seafood is too strong, so I will (begrudgingly) pay these prices when it's time...
Read moreWe've been to Scale twice, the first time we had oysters (pictured below) in-store and brought home ahi tuna. The second time was salmon, again brought home. We have never actually cooked anything from here. The fish was so fresh -- and I mean super fresh -- that we decided to prepare the ahi tuna as sashimi after having had some of the best mix of west coast and east coast oysters you can find in the NYC metropolitan area. My confidence in the ahi tuna sashimi was high because of our experience with the oysters, and for that we were rewarded with a wonderful at-home sushi dinner. This time around we decided to do the same with the salmon, served raw with some high quality soy sauce. Again, awesome experience. All your senses are delighted by the high quality of this seafood. The owner is very friendly and so knowledgeable, he always takes the time to talk about whatever it is you order or what's available. You can also dine in BYOB style although it's best to do this during warm weather as outside seating is available due to limited...
