We haven't been to our go-to Vegas restaurant, Magnolia's in four years. Unfortunately the dinning experience, we so looked forward to, was a complete and utter let down. To our disappointment, the soup was so un-great we couldn't even pretend to enjoy it. Unfortunately the Gumbo soup went from a 10 to 3 in the four years since our last visit. It had an unfamiliar foreign taste, unlike any Gumbo soup Magnolia served to us in the past. It was just plain bad. The next day we went to Magnolia's for supper. That warm, welcoming and very busy atmosphere, a signature of Magnolia's, seemed to have lost it's mojo. It was supper time. There was no lineup, which can be fun, interacting with the happy crowd anticipated great food, service and at a great price. That energy didn't exist on that day. We were seated on the other side of the veranda, although the restaurant was not very busy.
This was at 6pm and we were more than ready to dig in to some awesome astronomical Magnolia delights. Unfortunately, our server never took that into consideration. We waited for twenty five minutes before our sever even showed up..
Only to see him (a giant of a man over six feet tall, full of angst) as he gave the poor busser words and the few of us patriations, the stink eye.
When the server did finally reach our table his demeanor was unacceptable. No greetings or apologies for his tartness. Making us feel like Magnolia's was a big mistake. We should have left. But the sever looked like he was ready to rip someone's head off. Not wanted to make a scene we decided to wait for the great food and all will be OK. Wrong. We started with a cup of the soup of the day. Not wanting to eat their gumbo soup that was off the day before. The soup was noodles with ground beef in a broth that was so salty we couldn't eat more than a spoonful. And we were very hungry after waiting so long to be served. My wife ordered the Prime Rib. I ordered the porkchop, only to be told in an exasperated wave, not to order the Pork. It will take 25 mins to cook and your wife will be finished her meal before you are served. So with the high strung server breathing down my neck, I was rushed into ordering the spaghetti and meatballs. You can't screwup spaghetti and meat balls. Boy was I wrong. The spaghetti and meatballs were like prison food. Only worse, considering it was eighteen dollars. The sauce seemed to have been a can of dollar store tomatoes unceremoniously dumped onto a pound of watery spaghetti noodles. The meatballs were made with some kind of gritty sawdust as filler and mystery meat. It was topped with too much fake parmesan cheese and the meal was cold.
My wife's prime rip (twenty six dollars) was over cooked, the green beans were under cooked and tasteless and the french fries must of been sitting some were since the morning shift. In fact her whole plate was cold and un eatable.
During our meal our server didn't once come and ask how things were. And he seemed to do his best to ignore the other four tables in a virtually empty dinning area.
When we went to pay our bill which was seventy dollars, at the reception area there were a number of staff hanging around chatting. We stood there until finally one of the women, with an exasperated shrug said, I might as well take you over here, while I still work here. For the first time in our dinning experiences we refused to leave a tip. My wife quietly described to the casher, the horrible service and poor quality of the food. Our disappointment was met with a get out of my face eye roll. Needless to say our experience at Magnolia's was one we will never forget.
It will also be the first time in our lives we didn't leave a tip. And we have had some bad experiences when eating out. But nothing like this. Which is why you can count on one finger the times we did not leave a tip, for bad food and service.
In conclusion Magnolia's is the first restaurant to receive our one finger review. Feel free to guess which...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI was at the 4 Queens over the labor day holiday during Covid. I mention that because I am allowing for certain changes created by this situation that probably impacted the service at Magnolia's Veranda. I was kind of shocked by how crowded everything was during this time. I understand that the casinos have recently opened back up, and I don't think staffing levels are probably what they were pre-covid. I ate at this place 3 times during my stay. The first time was the first night. It was a long day, I was tired and dehydrated - it was over 110 degrees that day. I had been having a hell of a time getting anything to eat or drink. There were long lines everywhere. I am diabetic and I was not feeling well at all by the time I went to Magnolias. There were about 6 people ahead of me waiting to be seated and it didn't seem like any staff were really paying attention, but to be fair, it was really busy there and they can't seat as many people due to social distancing. But as I waited I started to feel very faint. A staff person finally told me they didn't have a seat for me at the moment, that it would be a bit of a wait. I asked if I could please have some water at least and she did bring it right over, so I was grateful for that. The wait wasn't too long and my waiter was really nice. I said I needed something to eat immediately and he brought me a very delicious cup of clam chowder. I ordered the burger and it was super yummy. The coleslaw was just ok. The next time I went was the following day. They were having a special on the hot turkey sandwich - I ordered it because I love a hot turkey sandwich, but it was awful. So salty it made my mouth pucker. I basically scrapped the gravy off the turkey, and just ate that with the cranberry sauce and the potatoes. The cornbread dressing was terrible. Also salty and dry. The next time I ate there was for breakfast. It was good. Nothing to complain about. The menu is pretty much devoid of veggies, so if you're a vegetarian, you should find somewhere else to go. Actually, if you're a vegetarian, you should either bring your own food, or leave the casino area and hit the surrounding restaurants like Le Thai, 7th & Carson etc. Most everything I ate at the downtown casinos was terrible and really over-priced. The quality of food at Magnolias is maybe better than a McDonalds, but a bit worse than a Denny's with an average meal costing over $20 bucks for a meal, drink,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI'm honestly conflicted on this review. No wait on a Saturday night at 8pm = great. Server greeted us quickly and took our order = great. (Despite it being difficult to understand him, but I blame the mask rules). Husband ordered the New York steak with fries and salad. (All entrees include seasonal veggies as well, today happened to be broccoli and cauliflower. ) His steak was perfectly cooked, still had to use some A1 as it was a bit flavorless. He took 1 bite of the veggies and couldn't eat them. They were over streamed in water, zero flavor besides the steel pot they were heated up in. (Yes, you could taste the tin flavor.) The fries looked like they were twice fried yet were cold. Looking around the restaurant we noticed most others that ordered fries also did not eat them. As for me, I got the rib eye with boiled baby red potatoes (false! They are not baby reds, they are reds just cut smaller.) My meat was perfectly cooked and decently seasoned that I didn't require extra sauce. The potatoes were under cooked, just barely out of the raw stage (explains why they cut the potato in half and try to call it "baby" red.) Same wretched seasonal veggies for me as well. Honestly, the best parts were the basic house salads and the slabs of meat. We saw our server once after food delivery but never again. So it was disappointing when the manager said we needed to tell our server. All the manager was willing to do was to replace the food. Who wants a second round of flavorless food? We are locals and eat all over town, unfortunately, we won't be coming back...
