Dropped by the newly renovated Castaways in downtown Long Beach Washington for lunch today. They should be proud of the renovations. It’s nice! Clean and classy, but not pretentious. You can certainly wear your jeans and sweatshirt without feeling like you are under dressed. Best of all; the food was delicious. We started off with a cup of their “award winning” clam chowder. You can taste why it’s award winning. It’s not your classic thick, creamy kind of chowder. It’s much lighter. But chock full of clams (BIG hearty chunks of clams!), perfectly soft potatoes, celery, garlic and other things that make this chowder simply splendid! I ordered the French Dip with tots, while my husband opted for the Crispy Pacific Cod sandwich with garlic fries. We both agreed that his choice was the winner. Three large pieces of incredibly crispy cod fillets on a brioche bun, lettuce, tomato, onion and tartar sauce. It was substantial AND delicious. The cod was perfectly fried and the breading was crispy and light. So good! The garlic fries were wonderful, too. Crispy, fresh with a nice hint of garlic, not in the least bit overpowering. My French Dip was good. Nothing special about it. Just good. The amount of roast beef was decent. It could have been elevated to a “great” sandwich with some grilled onions and a different bun. The hoagie roll was soft and squishy; reminiscent of something I could buy off the grocery shelf. I like my hoagie rolls to be more substantial in texture. So, while I didn’t dislike it, I could definitely see some improvements to be made. The au jus was nothing special, as well. Some rosemary or other herb infused into it would certainly elevate this sandwich from “just ok” to “awesome”. The tots were good….but how do you mess up tots? The hostess and waitress were both friendly and pleasant. Fantastic service.
Overall, we really enjoyed our meal at Castaways. Don’t miss out on the clam chowder. You won’t go wrong with that! We look forward to trying other things...
Read moreWe had an absolutely amazing time here. The wait was a bit long for a table, which is understandable because of how freaking good the food was.
My lady had this shrimp linguine in lemon cream sauce that was just devine. I had to have a few bites of it.
I had the grilled halibut in a caper white sauce that had so much flavor I couldn't stop eating it. It is very rare that I sit down at a restaurant where I do not have to salt my food, however here at castaways everything was perfectly seasoned and flavorful. I did not have to touch the salt or pepper at all.
We also had their crab artichoke dip, and that was just to die for. We couldn't finish it so we took it back to our hotel room. It was great reheated.
If you decide to get drinks I recommend their apple cinnamon old fashioned. This drink was both strong and full of flavor. The cinnamon sugar rim and stick gave the bourbon such a delicious flavor without overpowering it. I almost got two of them because they were so good, but opted to be responsible.
Staff was amazing. Even though they were super busy they thanked us for our patience while waiting for a table, and took excellent care of us. Our appetizers and meals came out rather promptly and food was nice and hot. They were out of oysters on the half shell, but had oyster shooters available. Had three of those too.
A little bit on the pricier side, but for everything we got, the service we experienced, and the quality of the food, it was well worth it. We will definitely be back. This has become our new restaurant to eat at when we visit long beach. Will be returning for lunch tomorrow on our way back home.
Good job Castaways! We love you.
Edit: For some reason when I try and give this review 5 stars for food, service, and atmosphere it does not save it. To be clear I am giving this restaurant 5 stars on every option...
Read moreI wanted to treat my little family out to a nice getaway weekend, and he really wanted fish, but my daughter and I don't like so I read all the reviews and was willing to give it a shot. When we walked in we were greeted instantly then sat down to a table. Our waitress came up took our drink order came back two minutes later took or appetizer order came back two minutes later and took our dinner order. It took about 20 minutes just to get our appetizers, we got the calamari and the mozzarella sticks, the calamari was fresh and hot and the mozzarella sticks tasted like they just came out of a box from the freezer and not hot. My sister ordered the crab melt comma the crab was fake package crab, the cheese with Kraft American sliced cheese they put so much cheese on it it overpowered it and I couldn't even taste the crap. My dad ordered the fish and chips it was cooked well nice and crispy but it wasn't hot it was warm the fries taste like they've been sat out for an hour and then thrown in a microwave just to heat back up. Mine and my daughter's dish was okay because she got grilled cheese and I got chicken tenders, but the fries again tasted warmed up. I enjoyed the service I did enjoy the food specially for $100 bill. If coming to Long Beach again I will not recommend this place to an outsider that's wanting fresh food comma it tasted like it came out of the freezer. I will not be...
