Nestled in the heart of East Village, in Downtown Long Beach, District Wine offers a cozy atmosphere and fine wine options for anyone looking for a nice night out or somewhere to impress a date. Local performers will sometimes visit and play live music - my favorite experience was a couple that played an acoustic guitar and sang Latin remixes of memorable bops. The table of friends that I was with actually got up and danced, soon joined by the adjacent table of strangers as well. I'm not sure if that is a normally acceptable thing but the staff was seen smiling, so take note that coming in with good energy is recommended. If you're going to be a snooty grump, probably go elsewhere.
The interior is decorated with a mix of mid-century modern and art deco design, with low-lighting and seating for small groups (parties of 1~6 are ideal). Your eyes will be drawn to the clever use of space and the wide displays of wine containing different blends and vintages. There is outdoor seating available as well if you want to enjoy your drinks observing the locals as they pass by on their way through the neighborhood. However, it can sometimes turn into unsolicited interactive theater with certain denizens out on the street. Just be nice, and a little charming, and all will be fine.
The staff is friendly and attentive, often taking the time to chat with the patrons and answer any questions about the menu and rotating options of wine. I had recently visited on a solo night out and opted to sit outside, only to realize that I had miscalculated and was afraid to go inside to use the restroom lest someone taint my unattended drink as they walked by. However, the owner herself happened to come out to check on me and offered to stand by until I returned. Between her and the charisma of my waitress, Laura, it was a welcoming experience.
Beyond just wine, there are cocktails, beer and small bites available, adding some variety and flavor to the experience. I recommend the prosciutto bon bons (prosciutto-wrapped dates, stuffed with goat cheese) as a snack. The quality of wine can vary, depending on your order, but they do offer flights and samples to gain a taste before you commit to a glass.
Parking can be a challenge with how closely the establishment is located to neighboring attractions. However, you can sometimes find metered parking or a spot in one of the parking lots nearby. If you don't mind a short walk, you can sometimes park in a parking structure. Be aware that if you park in the Shoreline Square parking structure, the gates do close at night but you can get in through the lobby of the Westin Hotel on the other side.
If you're in the area, want to go someplace where you can actually converse with your friends and take a break from the booming music of the club, it's worth dropping in for a glass or two.
Bring a positive mindset, drink responsibly, and remember to thank and tip...
Read moreI host a monthly Wine Wednesday and karaoke over in Long Beach which I've been doing for over a year. When our usual spot closed down a few months ago, I was told to check out District Wine. It came highly recommended for the wine, happy hour, and that it was woman-owned. (I'm a part of a local ladies group).
I reached out via email and IG to see if they could accommodate us for our monthly meets. Angela responded in both forms of communication and was happy to take our group. Now, our group can range from between 10 to 20 people at times. I was given options on where we could hang out. Inside, outside. I asked how the checks would be cared for and everyone would have their own tab. It was very convenient!
First meet we had there, we reserved the inside couch area. The food and wine were so delicious! My friends were very impressed with that and the service. Angela was also there to greet me and the group to make sure we were good. The group got bigger and we were offered to move outside, which we did. I asked for everyone's feedback and they were all very happy with the new spot. There was even one time at another meet where it was super windy and we were offered BLANKETS! OMG! BLANKETS!? Like I've never had that option before, this place is really awesome!
And now District Wine is our monthly go to spot for my group. This is a must have place to stop by in if you haven't...
Read moreI literally feel like crying. I am so sad to move out of Long Beach for the mere fact I will not be able to walk over to this amazing wine bar. They have an extensive wine list, both for the wine connoisseurs and less experienced folks like me! My fiancé loves their Napa Valley Cabernet $15 for a glass (they pour generously) and I take great interest in their dessert wines. Their Moscato Zonin ($8 glass/$30 bottle) and Sweet Red, Salt of the Earth ($8 glass/$30 bottle) are two of my favorite sweet wines.
You must try their highly sought out Prosciutto Bon Bons ($7), dates stuffed with chèvre, wrapped in prosciutto. Simply delicious! If you're enjoying a glass (or bottle) of wine, try selection of cheeses which comes with smoked gouda, manchego and blue cheese ($10) and I recommend adding their charcuterie ($3) extra. The Herbed Meatballs ($9) are tasty, but not anything you can't live without. Did try their pinot Braised Pork Belly ($10) and was disappointed with them, didn't melt in my mouth. The flatbreads which are mostly ($9) are average.
The service is always very attentive here. I enjoy the large seating area both inside or outside to catch a beautiful sunset. Not a place to get to wasted, very classy joint, but not...
