While this will sound familiar as it has been chronicled in almost each of the sub-five star reviews, I assure you it’s worth the read…
A 30th birthday party for my wife, we traveled to LA from NYC with a very detailed itinerary with the birthday brunch scheduled for this restaurant. Despite the myriad of reviews detailing poor service and laughably long wait times, we were adamant that these were likely one-off experiences and, if true, the restaurant management would have made adjustments. Apparently our naïveté knew no bounds.
An 11:00am reservation for 5 we had to move for logistical reasons so I called the restaurant at 8:00am. Spoke with Nancy who was pleasant and agreed to move our reservation to 11:30. We arrived on time but with no one in the front of the restaurant (or inside at the door to greet guests) we waited for 10 minutes in the line before venturing inside and finding out the reservations are up a service stairwell to the roof. We get upstairs (a seedy journey worthy of skid row) and the hostess (unfriendly) tells us that we’re 40 minutes late. After explaining the situation they have us wait on the side so they can check in other guests. We waited for 20 more minutes (now it’s 12:00) despite there being five (5) open park benches. While I have experience in restaurants and understand revenge waits this was still absurd. We’re finally seated at 12:10 and then it’s your typical Poppy & Rose experience: 25 minutes before the drink order, another 20 before the drinks arrive, another 35 before we have to flag someone down and beg to order, then another 50 minutes before we asked where our food was, then another ten before it arrived. Only second waitress Chasity (since there was a shift change while we were there. THATS how long we were waiting) spoke to us and checked in. In the end, our 11:30am reservation concluded at 2:10pm shortly after our mediocre food arrived lukewarm.
The management in anticipation of this review responsibly acknowledged the issues which is appreciated and the reason why this review is 2 stars instead of 1. All-in, the restaurant is fantastic for first dates since you’ll have their life story before the drinks arrive. Highly recommend ensuring your entire afternoon is free so you have time to actually enjoy the food…and pack a snack in case you’re...
Read moreVisiting California for a friend's birthday this weekend and she wanted to try out this spot. Originally had an appointment for 11:00 but changed the reservation to 11:30 with Nancy and she confirmedthe changes via the phone with my friend. Our group arrives at 11:00am looking at a line of people standing to enter. After 15 minutes, we were instructed to the stairway for reservations through a parking lot to the top. Spoke with the host and she stated our appointment was for 11:00. We stated to the host that Nancy told us she made the changes. The host stated that she would only need to find us a table and we would be seated soon. After 40 minutes of waiting and staring at open tables, we were finally seated to a table with no shade. Another 30 minutes go by before someone decides to take our order for drinks. 25 minutes go by and we get our drinks and water. After this, no waiter reappears to our table within 50 minutes. As we seat there in the sun, we notice a table seated after us got there food. We had to hunt down a waiter in order to begin the process of obtaining food. Our waiter stated our food would be out soon since we waited for sooo long. About another 50 minutes go by and no food appears. Meanwhile, we see other tables receive their food. Now it's 2pm and we finally received our food with no follow or apologies from a manager/staff member on duty. Long story short, we arrived at 11:30, waited another 30-45 mins to be "seated", was unable to order food until 1pm, & received our food until 2pm. This is by far the lowest point in our California trip!! Especially on my friend's birthday!!! I would not recommend this "supposed restaurant" to anyone!! This is one of the worst experiences I've ever had!! Out of protest, I refused to eat the food and figured someone in need (homeless) outside the restaurant would appreciate it more than me. Zero stars for me!! Absolutely an embarrassing performance/experience!!! Especially since it's black owned and I always love to support black owned restaurants. Also, if the owner sees this review, please instruct your manager to not have a "conflict resolution session" in front of customers! The hallway near the bathrooms is not an ideal spot and reflects poorly on the establishment!!!...
Read moreThey were very rude when we came in. We were standing in line and she told us that we had to wait outside. Then we get to the register and, being a first time patron, we asked some questions, and she was very irritated that we were asking questions. First of all, the selection was not that great, and secondly, what kind of hipster establishment doesn't have any gluten free options?! I mean Denny's even has gluten free options! She was also irritated that we had ordered a salad and had requested to change the salad dressing...not everyone likes a lemon vinaigrette. After completing our order, she shooed us away to some table, didn't even really seat us, just said "ya, sit over there". They brought over the drinks almost ten minutes after we sat down. The drinks, iced teas, were in very small glasses. We waited 35 minutes to receive our food. I had ordered a burger, and when she had asked, ordered it to be well done. What I got was a medium rare burger, not what I ordered. There were also tomatoes in the salad, when we had specifically asked for no tomatoes. We also ordered the pulled pork hash, and while not bad, the barbeque sauce that was used was very bland. The fries that came with the burger were supposed to be something fancy but were not that good. I can best compare them to In-n-Out fries, but skinnier and crunchier, with no salt. Overall, the food was not that good, just mediocre. However, the mediocre food was extremely over priced. The service was horrible. Once we got our food, I had asked for a side of ranch, which she never brought me. I had to ask another waiter, who was bussing a table, if he could bring me a ranch, which he finally did. She never came back to the table to check on us or to see if we needed any refills. We had to take our own glasses up to the counter to request a refill. Such a disappointing experience, horrible service, and overpriced blah food. For three people, we spent over $60. This establishment is also using the square register system, so you have to tip when you pay (before you even sit down), and I fear this has affected the wait staff performance and given them the freedom to overlook the value of good...
