Heard of this place and tried it out with my gf, and this place sure does not disappoint. If you're familiar with the set up of Kazu Nori, which is next door, you'll feel the familiarity in the set up and design. The staff was very kind and professional. Anyways to the good stuff. The pasta! These pastas are simple in the sense they they don't diverge much or at all from the traditional recipes, but most importantly the execution is spot on. I high recommend ordering one of the three tasting menus! I've only ordered the "Cheese & Truffle", but we'll definitely will be back to try everything on the menu. The Cheese and Truffle tasting menu comes with the following: 1)Yellowtail Crudo (appetizer)- a tasty appetizer if you're a fan of yellowtail, but the amount of olive oil was a bit much imo. Still good though. 2) My personal favorite of the tasting, the Tagliatelle in Truffle Sauce. A very delicious marriage of perfectly cooked pasta and truffles. The shave was nice and creamy and coated the pasta well, so you'd always be able to taste everything with every bite. The flavor is strong, so this can get boring after a while (if you ordered a full entree for yourself, instead of a tasting). Still my favorite though. Chef's kiss 3) Pomodoro- I'm not familiar with this pasta dish, but it's definitely tomato based. It was quite tasty and a nice contrast to the truffle pasta. My gf, hates my initial thought but to me it was like Chef Boyardee-ish but as if he actually went to study with the finest chefs in Italy and was successful and not some BS stuff we used to eat as kids because we didn't know what good food was yet haha 4) Another favorite classic Cacio e Pepe. Yum. I love the flavor and choice of the pepper. 5) Finally the Tiramisu.... Yes. Yes. Yes. You unfortunately have to share it. I'd say get your own...
Read moreWhere to begin? Although this restaurant may have decent food, I highly recommend spending your time and money elsewhere. The night we went, there was only one girl working as the host, and she has the worst attitude and customer service etiquette I've seen in ages! She was extremely condescending, and unable to properly help our party of five. We did arrive at different times, but those who arrived earlier were forbidden from ordering a drink at the bar while they waited because, according the girl, "those are part of our restaurant seating." All of the seats (approx 14) at the bar were empty, except for a couple sitting in the first two seats. Meanwhile, there were about 10 people waiting in the tiny entryway just inside the door. I asked why are the bar seats empty yet there's a crowd of people waiting, to which the girl stutteringly uttered, "uh, because our kitchen is having a bit of a backup right now." I then asked, "so, the kitchen can't take our order, but we can't sit down and have a drink while we wait until the kitchen can take our order?" At this point the girl, patronizingly said "Thanks for understanding", and answered the phone. Soooo, avoid this place at all costs...do not give your money to places who don't want it. We ended up going 5 minutes up the road to the much more desirable Republique for a fantastic dinner and excellent service...and we were walk-ins!!! Negative...
Read morePasta-focused restaurant that’s a sister restaurant to Kazu Nori and HiHo Burger. I’ve been to the Santa Monica location quite a bit, so I was curious to see how the Mid-Wilshire one would compare. One nice thing is that there is a parking garage that’ll give you two hours free when you validate at one of the restaurants. Came here on a Monday night at 6:30 and there were a few empty seats at the counter, which was nice since the Santa Monica one is always so crowded. They don’t seat you until your entire party is present. The three of us split the lasagna, cacio e pepe, amaratriciana, and some mushrooms. They do have wine available. The lasagna was a bit small but it was decent. The cacio e pepe was pretty salty and the server noted that it’s time sensitive, so eat it right as it’s served. I prefer the carbonara to the cacio e pepe as it is the same sauce but has the extra pop of some fatty guanciale. The amaratriciana was slightly spicy and I did enjoy the aforementioned guanciale. The mushrooms were smoky and a good offset to all the carbs. The texture of the pasta is always my favorite as it’s chewy and fresh. It’s fun to watch the chefs cook your food too, and they’re pretty quick about getting your food to you. There are shared bathrooms outside through the back. No tipping and there’s a 16% service charged...
