ZORI Restaraunt & Bar — Restaurant in Los Angeles

We specifically chose this restaurant to celebrate my Ukrainian friend’s birthday because of our cultural roots. The restaurant presents itself as Ukrainian — from the name to the interior decor — and we were truly excited to spend a meaningful evening in a place that reflects our heritage.

At first, everything met our expectations. The ambiance was beautiful, the food was both delicious and elegantly presented, and prices were reasonable. Most of the staff seemed to be Slavic, which added a familiar and welcoming atmosphere. The live music was another great touch that made the beginning of the evening feel authentic and joyful.

However, things changed when the DJ took over for the dance portion of the night. Despite this being a Ukrainian restaurant, he played five Armenian songs in a row, followed by just one outdated English track. When the birthday girl kindly asked if he could play something — which is widely understood and shared by many Slavic communities — he refused and said he does not play Russian music.

This response felt unfair and discriminatory, especially considering we came to a Ukrainian restaurant to celebrate a Ukrainian birthday, and not to hear Armenian music all night. We weren’t asking for anything offensive or inappropriate — just music that reflected the reason we came in the first place. Unfortunately, this attitude ruined the end of our celebration, and we had no choice but to leave early.

It’s a shame, because the restaurant has so much potential. I hope the management will reconsider who they entrust with the entertainment and ensure that future guests are respected, especially when they come to celebrate something so personal and...
