EDIT: Back in after a hiatus of disappointment and I was pleasantly surprised. Staff still aren't super friendly but there is eye contact and greetings. The ice tea is excellent and the bakery is tasty. If I have a complaint it's the music. I know musical taste is super subjective but this sounded like somebody's girlfriend's "absolute fave stuff, you'll like it, really".
EDIT: My previous review was for Kickapoo and I'm not entirely sure if the new name is old management or new. In any case, the airy and friendly vibe is gone. The surly barista couldn't even manage a hello to preface his "what would you like?" It seems like it's the same physical layout but honestly it just felt darker and kind of sad.
In my continuing exploration of coffee shops in my new town, I have passed by here several times on my way to MIAD but I've always been white rabbit late and couldn't stop in. Today I made a special trip just to check it out. I was not disappointed.....greeted very cheerfully as soon as I walked in (and the server complimented my boots, so there's that). Disclaimer:. My drink of choice is ice tea, not coffee, and theirs is very good. It has flavor and some character. I will try coffee next time I'm here. I didn't have plans to eat but their baked goods looked soooo good compared to the shellacked stuff you see any other coffee places I couldn't resist. The homemade biscuits were awesome. I highly recommend the apple cranberry butter.
The atmosphere is clean and relaxed. There are individual and long tables as well as bar seating along the large windows. Definitely a...
Read moreUsually, I don't post reviews unless they are positive. This one is somewhat negative but intended to be constructive. Purchased a coffee plus shot of expresso today (Sat 10/3) at the Erie street location. Unlike Colectivo (with which I am comparing Wonderstate), the coffee combo I was requesting is not listed on the Menu board. I didn't specify a size (12 or 16) and wasn't asked by the serving Barista. As a result, the combined price of the purchase plus the tip came to $5.75 (vs. $1.75 at Colectivo) leading me to think I was getting the 16 oz. So I was paying close to $2 more for 4 oz less of the product. Thus, Wonderstate seems over priced to this $$-conscious customer. Adding to my dissatisfaction was the fact that I had specified I had wanted the cup to be filled up. I wasn't told until I was given the noticeably unfilled container that a new batch needed to be brewed. My final criticism is this. Right now because of Covid precautions, many coffee bars do not have condiments accessible. In the case of Colectivo, I can ask for sugars in packs and cream in a small paper cup: in other words this particular chain has adapted to the health risks associated with the virus. My experience at Wonderstate is that they haven't made these adaptations, so it felt like I was inconveniencing the Baristas by asking for sugar and cream arranged so I could administer them myself. Overall, my experience here was an awkward and expensive one. Aside from that, the coffee is very good and the Baristas...
Read moreKickapoo is a great alternative to Colectivo and Stone Creek. The interior design of their space is what first drew me to them -- the coffee shop is open concept, with the bar in the center of the room. It's a minimalistic and modern aesthetic that is really chill.
So far, my favorite thing has been the biscuit, which they warm up and serve with a variety of jams, butters, etc. I always get the lemon curd, which is fantastic. The biscuit is the perfect amount of flakiness, too, and isn't chewy at all.
Their iced coffee is my jam (strong without being too bitter), but if you stop in, try their iced tea, which is actually carbonated. It's really interesting and definitely has a unique flavor.
The only drawback for me is that some of the tables are so small that they can only accommodate a single laptop and nothing else, so you can't really share. And I wish they had more food options, because I can't sit there for too long without thinking of going to Colectivo to get a sandwich or a quiche. Otherwise,...
