Low quality sushi at premium prices. They add too many ingredients to everything to mask the poor quality ingredients.
My wife and I were happy to finally have a dedicated sushi place in town. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to our hopes.
Service: We went on a Saturday and there was one server with most tables filled. It took about 20 minutes to place an order and we were there well over an hour. Server was nice but the service suffered for lack of staff.
Atmosphere: No frills, unstylistic, and an off odor permeates the restaurant (maybe it's the old building). We discussed getting takeout to avoid staying but elected to stay.
Order: Four Seasons Roll - Decent Obi Wan Kenobi Roll - Bad Lamborghini Roll - Edible Spam Roll - Basic, and the best part of the meal as it met expectations Half and Half Roll - Edible
Specific Feedback:
Fish Quality -- bad I could not tell the difference between the salmon, tuna, escolar, scallop, or really any of the fish. It was tasteless and had that slightly mealy texture that sashimi gets when it's not too old to serve but not fresh. Even the unagi had very little flavor, which is hard to accomplish.
Rice quality -- bad The rice was cold and dry and lacked any flavor. I'm not convinced they season the rice at all, and they certainly don't keep it moist and warm in a rice cooker.
Ginger, Wasabi, Soy -- bad The ginger was extremely bitter and acidic. It tasted old. The wasabi was not authentic and was obviously squeezed from a tube of wasabi-flavored horseradish. The soy sauce was fine.
Menu -- less is more! When you have good quality ingredients you don't need to cram 12 things into every roll. The flavor of the fish and the rice should be enough to carry the dish. I can only imagine how disappointed we would have been if we ordered nigiri or sashimi at premium prices ($7+ for two pieces of nigiri) and got this quality.
One last gripe -- "crabmeat" Most of the rolls contain "crabmeat" as a primary ingredient, but it is imitation crabmeat. No self-respecting sushi restaurant would EVER call surimi "crabmeat". Real crab is highly prized in Japan and sushi in general and this false labeling of their ingredients is dishonest. The menu should be updated to say "surimi" or "imitation crab".
I leave this scathing review not to shut this place down, but to let them know that they need to up their game. We still want a good sushi place in Monroe, and if Sushi Spott can become that,...
Read moreFor years my wife and I have lamented there's no good sushi within a 45 minute drive of us, and now, finally, within city limits there rises a champion of delicious fish! We've been twice now during their "soft opening" and if this is what we get to look forward to it's our new favorite place out! Service is excellent, prices are reasonable, selection and options are WILD. I've had sushi on both coasts of the US, North and South on both sides, inbetween and on other continents. I LOVE sushi, but it's usually been a special occasion thing because we have to go to the city and everything is expensive in the city, ect. No more! We ordered 4 rolls, the ocean (seaweed) salad and the cost after tip was 65 bucks... We've spent more money at KFC, so safe to say this is a solid favorite right now and we couldn't be more stoked. There's almost too many options! Even when the fryer is down, therefor half the menu is null and void, the options are prolific. The Hawaiian five oh is a great roll, the flavors swirl and evolve as you go, it's an excellent flavor journey. The salad was a generous portion good enough for the two of us in one serving. The things that are listed as "spicy" are pretty mild and shouldn't scare any but the most spice sensitive. We've already been back, so look forward to...
Read moreThe food is phenomenal the staff is phenomenal the cooks and chefs are all amazing but I do not like or agree with the changed floor plan when you guys first opened up you had the right idea with creating a booth type of deal which was more comfortable felt more private for someone sitting there now I come in and it's all like a different open floor plan you got all the booth seats up against one side of the wall paid with tables and then chairs on the exterior which I'm sorry it makes it feel like you're being forced to sit by strangers and hear their conversations like what the hell I thought we were getting a place where we can come to have a nice date at I really strongly advise your managers and you guys to reconsider and reset up the booth the way they were now when you sit there you can't even hear the person you're trying to have a dinner with and the conversation and then people are just going to over listen to what you're talking about probably get offended and butt hurt in some weird way that one goes to all the Karen's out there but for real I thought we could have like a nice romantic sushi spot for couples it's just really awkward that open floor plan and if the excuse is just a fit more people in that is not okay I would then advise start doing...
