One of their first customers back in 2013. Their pastries were always delicious. As they have gotten more customers throughout the years, they aren’t as consistent anymore. We used to like eating our pastries and drinks there although its always very warm and tiny space. Everything was great till covid hits. Understand they were closed for a long period of time and only pre-orders. We even ordered pastries and birthday cakes during pandemic. When we went back few times after they reopen, they didn’t seem to welcome people in to sit inside to grab a quick bite. It didn’t feel like a cafe where you could enjoy your pastries like the old days even if there is only one available seating inside. it is more like grab and go kind of place. The service was not friendly like it used to be. They now have their own family run this place. The guy who works there which was one of the family members had the audacity to ask for tips just because we were eating inside while standing with no chairs by the counter height cole table. He did not serve us and on top all cafes in NYC are self service and you can enjoy the food inside. Despite all the downgraded pastries they serve now, I didn’t mind to support their business. Its just odd for someone to ask for tips while they didn’t even serve you Many desserts they used to serve are not there anymore. The pastries are much smaller than it used to be even the prices went up significantly. We understand about the inflation but it should have same standard as it used be be. We won’t be back anymore. It is not worth the trip. We prefer going to Tadaima which is a cute cozy friendly japanese cafe in BK. The owner is the sweetest and she makes yummy pastries and coffee. Go...
Read moreTrue hidden gem in Brooklyn. They only open from 10am to 2pm on weekdays. When I had an unexpected day-off on Tue, I knew it was a sign to visit Burrow. Their store is located inside a commercial building, so it took me awhile to figure out where the entrance was.
*Quiche Forgot what were the fillings... it should be loaded with chicken, bell pepper and spinach. The savory egg custard was incredibly soft and jiggly. The quiche was packed full of bright veggie and herbal flavors. I was disappointed by most of the quiches served in other bakeries, but this one was exceptionally yum.
*Gateau Basque Custard My fav pastries out of the three. I thanked myself for picking this simple but divine pastry over other fancy-looking ones. Their tart crust slayed with its flakiness. The almond custard fillings were encased in the buttery dough. Silky, nutty and (most importantly) not too sweet.
*Strawberry Pistachio Cake I witnessed the cakes sold out within an hour during my stay at Burrow. Coated with whipped cream and a thin layer of jelly-like strawberry jam. The strawberry mousse was bursted with fresh and naturally sweet flavor. You could clearly distinguish there wasn't much added sugar in this piece. The pistachio sponge cake was fluffy, yet the flavor was bland and overpowered by the strawberry mousse.
My Recommendations: Everything
Worth Returning ?...
Read moreBurrow is truly a gem! I don’t get lots of chances to visit Burrow because it only open on weekdays from 9am to 4pm. But I will make a trip here if I get a day off even it might not be on my way. So far, I have tried roasted green tea biscuits, green tea financier, gateau basque and Sakakura cake (seasonal). All of them are very impressive. Today I gave a shot to the milk tea cake, which has a very thin layer of cake base, milk tea mousse, lychee jelly and candied almond flakes on top of the cream - once again, it blew my mind without any doubt. If you like the texture of mousse, the refreshing from lychee and the aroma from almond, then definitely try it! I also got an onion cookie to go, which I would assume is a savory sweet? We will see;)
