EDIT: Campo Panino now $9.50+ @ Mangia 57 If you change the black pepper herb mayo to a vegan mayo, make it a black pepper herb vegan mayo to stay close to the original sandwich which was excellent. The new vegan version is just bleh! Every time I get it, I have to go to the sandwich station in the back to ask for a side of black pepper mayo! I can do black pepper herb vegan mayo so please change the new Campo Panino accordingly. TY. P.S. Usually the sandwich station does not have the pizza Bianca bread so you cannot get this sandwich done there to your liking. You get it up front where it is pre-made and they just hot press it on the grill. 3 months ago: Mangia has been around 40 years+ and pioneered farm-to-table menu in NYC. Still my go-to spot for lunch since 2003 when my office moved to midtown. Varied food options including the prepared salad section which I love! Arugula with fennel! Recently includes castelvetrano olives! Also great paninis with Pizza bianca bread. Pizza bianca is Rome’s version of a focaccia - flat bread with an outer crispy crunch. The Campo Panino is a classic and one of my favorite sandwiches. The original version was CAMPO PANINO roasted asparagus, spinach, black pepper and herb mayonnaise, roasted fennel, on pizza Bianca bread. Really awesome! The new version is CAMPO PANINO roasted asparagus, spinach, vegan mayo, roasted fennel, on pizza Bianca bread. BLEH! Does not have the oomph of the original version. The mayo makes a difference. And the filling is skimpy lately. Really a travesty cause Mangia ruined a really good sandwich. Very...
Read moreAmended post from five star about six months ago, to three star based on recent visit. Close to closing time, felt rushed to leave, but worse, the salmon on the side bar (not main salad bar), was 'braised' or some such in some type of thick glaze, which looked and tasted like floor wax. Looks aside, it was barely edible as it was so salty...like a mouthful of seawater swimming in the ocean.
Too, the cheese as part of the spinach salad (main bar) with walnuts and blue cheese(??) was almost inedible...the cheese overly salty similar to the sidebar braised. Of note, the spinach itself was wet and slimy, hardly fresh...must have been swimming in oil all day.
Also on the side bar, the trout was good, but dry.
The paste penne al vodka on the side bar wasn't bad, but not hot.
The choice of drinks was almost nil, full if I remember from last visit.
Overall, based on this latest visit, I would say quality has decreased significantly from six months ago, and I will likely neither go back nor recommend it to friends and family as I did before.
In their defense, if one considers it a defense, I did come within about 15 mins of closing time on a Monday, but that should not have led to the disastrous outcome above.
All of these issues above very preventable with basic mgt oversight and quality control. Do it right, or don't do it at all...the long-term reputational damage risk isn't the short-term cutting of corners.
May try in another six months or so to give one...
Read moreGreat food but high prices and only from noon until one PM otherwise their food sits All day. FYI I was contacted by this restaurant with a scathing email in which case I will keep sharing my truth. Firstly I was wrong in stating this establishment closes at one PM, what I meant was that their food sits out All day that past one PM in my opinion isn't desirable. I have visited Mangia on 57th street for years and stand correct with my opinion of urging customers to arrive for lunch UNLESS they prefer food that's been sitting out for hours. They claim to be a family owned place which may be so but judging from their rude aggressive email I can now understand why my 'Lgbt friends always get ridiculed by some of their staff each time I have visited and as I recall some of their Spanish speaking staff ridiculed myself and friend a few months ago not thinking I speak Spanish and although I raised my concerns it went unheard which is disappointing but nevertheless rest assure I will take my business elsewhere and urge anyone reading this to...
