On October 16 a little after 12 midnight this happen. Now I put two stars not because of the service. Service is great. Bartender was a cool guy. It was some of the customers there. I’m an EMT, I’m also a slightly larger man of Latino decent. One particular night after a long shift. I needed to take a breather. I wasn’t looking for trouble. Wasn’t looking to get laid. Just needed a moment.
To the left of me where a few women having drink and socializing. I noticed one hold her bag as I got close. I didn’t think anything of it. So I shrugged it off. Then when I ordered my drink and wanted to break a bill. I figure perhaps one of them could have change for me to break. When I looked around and nicely asked if anyone had change. (So I could leave a tip. The bartender was really cool) I was ignored by the two women in front of me. Then another smaller caucusian woman seemly our of no where screams. “No no one has change”
I just shrugged it off and simply had the bartender break my bill instead. I never encountered racism before. I never assumed it was even around. I was born and raised in brooklyn. Being judged by how you look was never a thing. Until that night. I’ll never forget the look they gave me. How the woman immediately secured her leopard print jacket. And they grabbed there purses. I mean no one harm but that night I just felt horrible. To prevent myself from being rude after I finished my drink I went home. And realized that Williamsburg brooklyn has a passive aggressive racism. Those ladies made me feel less than human. Especially the one who felt it necessary to scream out. “No we don’t have change”
It was at that moment I missed the way Williamsburg used to be. Diverse, open, and colorful. Now it’s dark and cold, the same repetitive pattern of bars, coffee shops and trendy eating areas. Make no mistake. Your tolerated if you look different. At best your tolerated but if you don’t look like them. Your an outcast from the moment...
Read moreBest dive bar in Williamsburg! Lovely staff, real pros. If you're good people, they'll know. Generally a young, mostly unpretentious crowd, but there are a few staunch mature regulars. Pretty much a beer and shot locale, but the bartenders are quite capable of making mixed drinks and cocktails if you ask nicely. 🍻🥃🍹🍸🍷🍾🥂🇨🇦
Update re: post covid mandate. Suns out, guns and buns out! Always a good time! Get their early to rock the pool table and knock hockey in the back. Always tip generously. They give preference to regulars who tip well, so you'd do well to do the same. 10% is lame, 15% is barely passing, 18% to 22% is sweet, 25% to 30% is what I usually tip because I love them, and I never wait. See how that works? Do this for food delivery guys, too. Food is allowed at Ontario, just pick up after yourselves. And don't whistle or holler at the staff. Try a smile with eye contact, or even introduce yourself like a mature human being: there's no need to flash your...
Read moreHardwood floors, a bunch of Canadian flair, Molson on tap?!?!? What more do you need in life? Beer is a nice cold, gold like nectar from the great white north (or likely distributed from some place in Buffalo). I have no idea if they have snacks, but I’ll be honest I would just stick to the beer and whiskey here. Nothing else. If you happen to be on a date, and the girl is pretentious and annoying, definitely bring her here to end the date asap. Then you can enjoy a nice beer in...
