There is an absence of casual breakfast places in the neighborhood so I really wanted to make Smor happen. I have faithfully returned there over and over again, trying every item on the menu, hoping to find something good. I found one - a delectable cardamon bun. The rest has either gone downhill (food) or was never good to begin with (sweets). Most of the baked sweets and bread are all burned on top, an indication of the oven being set on high. The flavors are off, the consistency of croissants and donuts is dry and mealy. The breakfast food used to be good when they started, trout scrambled eggs in particular were wet with lots of dill and pieces of trout. But the last few times it became apparent that they are cutting corners, the eggs have come out dry every time, tiny bit of dill just sprinkled on top instead of inside the eggs and trout almost non-existent. The egg/cheese sandwiches come on good sesame buns but the eggs are bland and under-seasoned, slathered in way too much aioli. Today was my last attempt. It's a pity.
Answer to the owner - Thank you for answering. I did flag those in person, twice in the last few months, and the eggs were remade, but next time there were same issues...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place but...The service is average (grumpy girl at the till, maybe bad luck). The sourdough bun with butter and cheese (5,50 USD without tax) came with a big lump of cold butter in the middle that was not spread across the bun at all (yet it took almost 10 minutes to prepare, something that could be just pre made and it would probably work just as well - or better). The bun itself was ok, but I feel like I would do a better job just buying the bun then and preparing it myself at home. In Prague, a tiny city in a tiny country in Europe, there's several bakeries that do these buns and they are just better. I don't know why is it so hard to find GREAT bread in NYC. We also bought a sourdough loaf, a donut and pain au chocolat - all tasty and fresh but nothing exceptional. Drip coffee was quite good tough, a lighter roast. Seating is very cramped and limited. No toilets (to wash hands) even though they served cooked breakfast. Everything comes in disposable packaging unless you specifically say, although they actually have normal mugs (or maybe our server was just too grumpy to ask). This is all NYC standard, but it's still a bit underwhelming with the prices and...
Read moreFollowing an amazing brunch at Smor Restaurant, we decided to visit Smor Bakery for some sweet treats to take home, and it was the best decision! The bakery's selection is both enticing and impressive. We chose cinnamon buns, cardamom buns, and banana bread, each one a delightful discovery of flavors.
The cinnamon buns were a perfect blend of sweet and spicy, with a soft, doughy texture that melted in our mouths. The cardamom buns were a unique treat, their aromatic flavor making them a standout choice. And the banana bread was moist, rich, and full of banana goodness, just like homemade.
What really sets Smor Bakery apart is the authentic Scandinavian touch they bring to their baked goods. The quality and taste of their offerings are exceptional, making every bite a memorable experience. I highly recommend taking the opportunity to pick up some of their Scandinavian specialties – they're a must-try!
