THE COUPLE • Brunch hard or go home💪🏼😋❤️ • THE COOKBOOK • Egg Sandwich - scrambled eggs, white cheddar & chili flake served on a brioche bun, topped with bacon and avocado . Tortilla Hash - egg, potato, rosemary, white cheddar and avocado • THE CHEF • “Local New Yorkers tend to look for Mom and Pop places, you know, something unique. When we opened The Common’s back in 2011 there was nothing like it in Chelsea. It all started with just 4 neighborhood friends who shared the same love for great food. We came up with the concept of a neighborhood spot, a place where you'd want to hang out. A place that served really good coffee and delicious food, while using the best ingredients. With time the idea blossomed into the concept of an “all-day café”. The Common’s was the name of our high school cafeteria, a place where we used to mingle and hang out and therefore the perfect name for our café. . Working as a team of four business partners can be quite challenging and is definitely an experience in its own. There are moments where we disagree, but everyone has their own role, their specialty, their defined job within the business. That’s how we are able to work successfully as a team. We constantly check in on each other, while maintaining respect towards one another's field of responsibilities and expertise. It's important that we look at things from different angles, so we definitely promote open dialogue. Generally, I try to see feedback in a constructive way, try to see it from an outside perspective in order to improve and grow. . Now that we've opened our second restaurant Motel Morris successfully, our next goal is to change things up a little bit at the Commons, kind of like a facelift‘. It’s like being in a relationship, if you do the same things for several years, in the beginning it’s great and exciting, but after six or seven years it might not be as exciting any longer. The Common’s is a great brand, it’s our brand and we are proud of it. We want to keep our brand, but bring in some new ideas in order to keep it as the place you want to go to, hang out and enjoy a solid cup of coffee and a great meal.” ~ Sam (Co-Owner of the...
Read moreThis spot is so small that it's not a great place to get work done. There's so little room I feel guilty taking up space for hours at a time. But as a space to meet up, hang for a little while, or even just work for a short period it's quite nice. And if there are no other people there I feel less guilty. I'm not a coffee person so I tried the hot cider. Quite delicious!
The staff has always been friendly to me even when I stayed til closing working. There are few outlets, so don't expect to nab one unless the place is empty.
The food is a wee expensive, but not out of the way for the area. And there's little to choose from within a few blocks of here if you're looking for intimate and cozy.
I come here when I'm in the area, though never go...
Read moreFantastic space stuffed to the gills with board games, card games, and any type of game you might fancy. Really well curated selection of Euro games, from the Catan and Dominion to Powergrid to some smaller titles, too.
If you're a Magic: The Gathering player, there are drafts and release events. But I'd classify The Commons as much more of a board game LGS than an MTG oriented one.
Space is at a premium given its Greenwich Village location, so finding a seat may not be in the cards. But the space they have is utilized well.
Coffee is very good. Good tea selection. Snacks and pastries aren't much to offer, so if you plan on digging in for a long game session, you're kinda outta luck on...
