I finally came back to Yia Yia Homemade Greek Food after after almost 8 months. First discovered the place as it's a stones throw away from New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where I had a minor operation on my hand from a bike fall. I remember I was so hungry after release from the hospital and saw this Greek place. So, decided to come back as I was in the area to deliver a Christmas gift. There is quite a number of items on the menu. Souvlakis, Gyros, Salads, Sandwiches and Burgers, On a stick to name a few. I decided to get the same items from my first visit. I ordered the lamb/beef gyro, which is served in wrapped pita with tomato, onion, lettuce and tzatziki ( a sauce made of strained yogurt mixed with cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil, sometimes with vinegar or lemon juice and herbs such as dill, mint, parsley and thyme). Also, got the chicken gyro as well with the same ingredients. For dessert, got the rice pudding (yia yia or rizogalo) which is a no butter, egg free looks like a custard and flavored with vanilla, lemon peel or orange zest. So, after ordering the food to go and a quick commute back home, prepared the food. How was it? Just as good as I remember it. The Lamb/Beef was amazing, unusual combination as I would think you would separate the two Meats but by combining them, they create a unique, quite delicious flavors. The chicken gyro was good too though maybe not as much as the lamb/beef though it can definitely hold its own. The rice pudding was sweet though not overly and seemed as great combination with the gyros. It was worth making the trip back and Yia Yia is definitely a place with good food....
Read moreFor a long time I had passed this place when walking up or down 1st avenue and was always intrigued to try it out. Yesterday my family and I decided that we wanted to try out a new place and by chance my mother had also mentioned that she always passed by Yia Yia's and was also always intrigued to one day try it. So we decided to give it a try, and man was it worth it! My family and I are old school so we decided to place a delivery on the phone rather than online through their website. I got the lamb gyro, my mom got the chicken souvlaki, and my father got the briam. The lady who answered the phone was very friendly and took my order and then thanked me again for calling and order with them, which I really did appreciate. When placing an order on the phone one does not usually get that friendly customer service that they would get when going into a restaurant and sitting down. But overall, the food came to us in 20-30 minutes, was still hot as if it came out of the oven, and all of it tasted amazing. My lamb gyro tasted like I had just gotten it fresh from a Halal cart but even better! My parents also really liked their dishes as well. Overall, I wish I had tried Yia Yia's sooner because it was literally SO GOOD!!!! Definetely will be ordering...
Read moreDefinitely Blah Blah PLAIN Food, not too Tasty. I ordered Greek Lemon Potatoes but instead got boiled a Long Time overcooked and mushy soft Potatoes. They were not Real Greek Lemon Potatoes which are supposed to be crunchy on the outside and taste with Lemon Flavor and not just be sprayed with Butter and be put in the Oven to be overcooked after Boiling. Sadly their on the Stick Kebabs are not cooked fresh and are tough and drier pieces of Pork, Chicken which seem to be sprayed with lots of Oil, but have lack Flavor. Even less than a year ago the same place made much better Greek Foods. Now whomever area the cooks look not Greek but just as if they came untrained from South of the Border and don't want to cook Real Greek Recipes and pay attention how Real Greek Foods should taste. The only thing which tasted ok was Pita bread. Next time even going to next door Chipotle or other Places like Panda, or Beats or even Pizza might look like a...
