A quick preview to our experience:
Mother-in-Law before lunch: "It'll be so nice to try something different on the boardwalk."
Mother-in-Law after lunch: "What a disappointment that was."
So if you choose to keep reading- this place is a dud. Our group was so excited to try a new restaurant (we frequent the OC boardwalk more than most) that had lots of options from a long list of lobster rolls, to sushi, breakfast, fun beverages, etc. They even said our picky eater of the group (he's 5) could bring in pizza from elsewhere. While we appreciated this, we should have known that it was a red flag.
My husband and I were especially excited to try both the lobster roll(s) and sushi rolls. We arrived slight before noon. We were told that sushi wasn't available until noon....which, ok, fine. We are happy to wait. But then when we asked can we order the sushi and bring it out when it's ready after noon, they followed up saying that it now will not be ready until 12:30. That is a cop out if I've ever heard of one. Have a disclaimer on your menu if you do not plan on serving a lunch item AT LUNCH TIME. So my husband decides to get the salmon tartare instead. Also, no can do because raw fish....even though it's on the appetizer menu, and not the sushi menu. He ended up with sad order of fries which were less than average and served with what seemed like a tarter sauce of sorts? It wasn't a bad combo, it's just not what you'd expect with fries.
I ordered a traditional lobster roll. All of the lobster rolls on the menu are a flat $25. I wanted to try one that had extra toppings to get the most out of the price, but I also wanted to try a classic to see how it compares to others. That was a mistake- not only is the roll incredibly small and not worth the cost, it additionally was not that great in flavor. Though, anger may have just been overpowering all at this point.
My father-in-law ordered the lobster bisque which was surprisingly (in a good way) packed with lobster meat, but he said the flavor was just ok.
The rest of group ordered a variety of fried items, all of which were also just ok. Literally, nothing to write home about. The different lemonade options were fun, but not enough to make the establishment worthy of 5 stars.
Speaking of 5 stars: they have posted all over the tables "if you leave a 5 star review we will give you a free dessert." Now if that's not telling about the restaurant, I don't know what is. Of course there will be people dying to get an OC priced free dessert in exchange for giving a great review to a just ok restaurant. Count me out. That left an even more sour taste in my mouth on top of everything else. I guess it's no surprise that I'm really digging into this place right now.
The restaurant itself is nice, it's roomy, it's clean...they have baby friendly bathrooms. But unfortunately, a restaurant is not worth going to if the entire experience feels like a facade.
Go literally anywhere else on the boardwalk for better food. And for the lobster roll lovers: go to Quincy's Original Lobster Rolls. This place is delicious for the same exact price and almost 3X more...
Read moreI don’t leave many reviews but we were so disappointed that I have to.
Tried this place as it wasn’t here last year. Was excited as they seemed to have lots of seafood options.
Upon arriving, we tell the young woman at the host stand our party number (6 adults). Right off the bat, she confirms about 8 times our party count like she was confused. She finally sees a table to seat us and says it would be about 5 minutes for them to clear it off. We say fine since it was just five minutes. She the proceeds to tell us to go stand outside (with the large group of other people in line) as we were “in the way”. One of my party members asks if someone would cone get us but she didn’t see to understand the question. I confirm that all she’s asking us to do is just make way for people trying to exit. She says yes and we simply stand off to the side. Was a little irked she tried to kick us out just to make room instead of just saying to make space but whatever.
We finally get seated. Everything was fine with the waiter taking our drink orders and food/appetizer orders however it seemed like they were out of most of the things we ordered.
Food finally comes and this is where our disappointment really comes to a head. The lobster Mac n cheese ($24) was bland and watery. Reminded me of Marie Callendar’s microwave Mac n cheese. There was 5 tiny chunks of lobster and it tasted frozen which you’d think it’d be fresh from a seafood restaurant on the boardwalk. The sushi we had was fine. Nothing superb but it wasn’t bad. However we saw it made and then sat under the heat lamps for 15min before our waiter grabbed it and sat it at our table. Hopefully no one gets sick off it. The lobster bisque ($9) tasted like Walmart lobster bisque. It was grainy, overly sweet, and had more tiny bits of that (probably) frozen lobster. Once again it was bland. Three of us got crabcake sandwiches. Bread was sopping with butter, the crabcake was bland, and the amoulade was super mustardy. Fries were crispy but needed salt. Two of us got seafood boils. One got the Scallop boil and the other got the surf n turf. The scallop somehow costed more despite having the same amount of scallops as the surf n turf but the surf n turf had shrimp too. So you’re paying more for less for the scallop boil. Once again, everything was bland and tasted frozen. The other person got a salmon roll which sat for 15min under the heat lamp. One person got a lobster roll too but it was forgot to be made so it was removed from our bill. It was busy, but we saw the manager more than we saw our own waiter. I had one of their lobster rolls the other day (via Munchy Bites which I’m pretty sure is owned by the same group) and Quincy’s is better.
All in all, we spent over $300 on mediocre and bland food with subpar service. Wont be back again. Save your money for...
Read moreSpouse wanted to try beause it looked interesting and she wanted good seafood. Wife was looking at lobster roll on menu, but noticed no side listed with it. I called and asked, was told it comes with fries. When wife ordered it, was told no side; she had to order fries as extra. When walked in was immediately turned off because it is a misrepresentation. It is basically an Asian/Japanese style sushi restaurant with a American-looking appeal. I thought I was going to a South Jersey style traditional seafood establishment. The website, decor, and music (Country) all appeared domestic/American, but it seemed more like a Japanese-style establishment. The only item that appealed to me was the Cape May filet (or something like that)- I asked about it, and was told they did not have any steak. I decided not to order anything. The rest of my family ate. They said it was ok, but not spectacular. Before we even went there, my wife commented on the price of the lobster roll-- $25. She said she did not think it was worth that. If the restaurant represented itself properly, I believe the title, website, etc would reflect its sushi and Japanese style. What was also off-putting was that when it was time to pay the bill, I placed my credit card out to be ran, and then brought back for me to add tip, etc. Instead the waitress brought over a handheld cad reader-- I had to insert/tap card and figure out tip as she hovered over me. Would have given less than I actually did, but the whole situation had me frazzled. Will not be going here again. If you are looking for the South Jersey shore seafood experience,...
