Handel's Homemade Ice Cream Oceanside — Restaurant in Oceanside

My first, and last time, attempting to get ice cream from this store. There was 1 window open. I waited patiently, for over 10 minutes, while two sets of customers ordered. The second set, a family of 6, Grandmother, Grandfather, their child, his wife and their two young children, each got double ice cream cones. I stood in front of the windows looking over the large selection, for a long time. It was a very hot day, the August sun was strong. I moved into the shade and out of the way of foot traffic on the corner of the block. There was no one else in line behind me. I worked in F&B serving food for 26 years. I have skin cancer. Finally, as the family of 6 was wrapping up their order, 3 women then walked up to order. While I was waiting, and conversing with the Grandmother who got the special pecan ice cream she was feeding her grandson. The 3 women, THEY knew I had been waiting. They did not object. When I finally got my turn to order, I was told by the young woman behind the window I had to wait in line. I told her I HAD been waiting. She didn't believe me. I was going to have to argue for my ice cream. As if I would cut off 3 women in line. (Who said "Oh no he can go ahead!" ) Again I was refused service. Guess what? All 55 year old men are not bad. Some of us have manners. Some of us are gentlemen. Some people may have a bad habit of cutting off people in line and no social graces, my upbringing means I was given (mandated) social graces and manners. I was insulted. In 26 years serving food I never treated a customer like that. I did not give them my business. Nor will I ever. There are other places to get ice cream in Oceanside, on and off season. I'll make sure I find them. Not every ice cream produces a smile. Especially the ones you refuse to sell. I wanted to share an unfortunate experience I had last night at handles which left me quite disappointed, especially as a first-time customer visiting from out of town. I arrived at the service window at 9:45PM, well before your advertised closing time of 10:00 PM. I was excited to try your ice cream based on the many great reviews I had heard. However, when I attempted to place my order, one of your employees informed me that they were unable to take my order. When I politely mentioned that there was still time left before closing and that I knew what I wanted, she responded in a rude and dismissive manner, even slamming the window shut. What was even more disappointing was that she then began to clean and ignored both myself and the customer behind me. I was left feeling shocked and disheartened by how the situation was handled, especially by someone I believe was a shift lead. As a first-time customer, this experience left a very negative impression on what I had hoped would be a highlight of my trip. I expected a higher level of service and professionalism, especially from a place with such a strong reputation. I understand that closing time can be a busy and stressful moment, but I believe customers should still be treated with respect and courtesy. My husband and I love eating ice cream, so when I went to visit him in Oceanside we knew we had to find an ice cream place! Handel’s was the first place we saw and after that the only place we went! It was amazing and the portions were huge, but the prices were very reasonable! The first day I got the coconut caramel delight and it even had chunks of Samoa cookies! The next day I wasn’t sure what I wanted, but knew I wanted a chocolate base. The employee recommended the Rocky Mocha Blast and I was so glad she did! It was some of the best ice cream I’ve had and of course we had to get the chocolate dipped cones! Great ice cream, customer service and prices! We will definitely go back!
