I rarely give 5 stars. You have to earn them. Laan Thai does just that. This restaurant checks so many boxes we were shocked. Typically restaurants fall in a category or two. Flavor, Cost, Service, Cleanliness and Decor, and branding.
Food The food is very flavorful and the mixture of flavors stands out. We had the crispy duck red curry and pineapple pork fried rice. The flavors and textures are expertly crafted. The crispy duck is in fact crispy. Seems like a small detail. But many mom and pop restaurants don't take the time and care in the food details. This restaurant does. Very impressive. Also the serving sizes are huge! I suspect that over time the food quality and at least the serving sizes might change. They have only been open for 4 months. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain that business model.
Cost The cost is a bit higher then most places. This is not a "cheap" date night. We spent about 25 a person for just the for the 2 entrees. Before people complain this is definitely a "you get what you pay for." The cost is in line with other restaurants in this price range. Totally worth the cost. Especially if you enjoy Thai!
Service Wow! It is not often service is top notch in this kind of restaurant. Typically the service consists of very friendly staff. The service watched our table very closely. Which was very refreshing. There was no staff members sitting in the corner on their phone. Every moment was utilized by the staff for their customers. Impressive.
Clean/Decor This is possibly the restaurants only downfall. The restaurant was clean. It is decently taken care of. The decor is not cheesy or over the top. The videos that were playing on the TVs was an interesting choice. They should show custom videos of their own or stock content of Asian inspired Street food. They were streaming some random YouTube video of street food and some guy walking around a city? I like the idea. But it cheapened the feeling of the restaurant. Some awesome Asian food or street food being shown that looks as good as their food would up the overall feeling of the restaurant.
Branding Most restaurants lack in this category. Asian restaurants usually fail in this category. But wow! Just open their menu that is expertly designed was very refreshing. The photos were impressive and alllows an inside look to their food. The mouth watering images really help you understand the value of the food you are about to eat. They need to update their building sign as the old business sign is still hanging.
I very rarely give a 5 star. Companies need to earn it. This is definitely a 5 star restaurant. Our hope is their food quality stays the same. Their food costs must be high so you may see the quality or portion sizes stay as they...
Read moreI'm sad to have to write this review because I've been coming to this restaurant every few months since it first opened, but my recent meal there was the final straw and the last time I'll eat there. The food has always been pretty good as long as they haven't run out of whatever you were hoping for which unfortunately seems to happen often. The service, well it hasn't ever been great. Definitely expect to wait for everything because they usually only have one or maybe two servers running around feverishly trying to keep everything together. The prices weren't ever great either, but they were tolerable until my most recent trip that spurred this review. The menu recently changed and it seems they just slapped an extra $4 on top of all the already overpriced items. They also removed several of my most favorite items. See that picture of the small fist-sized pile of orange chicken? Yeah that cost me $18 which is absurd. Those are Manhattan prices, not Ogden prices. It was tasty, but I'll definitely just go to Panda Express and get twice the food for half the price and it will taste 80% as good. Also, they will have ice for your drinks and it won't take an hour to be seated and get your food.
The total bill for my wife and I to get just two basic entrees and literally nothing else but two glasses of warm tap water was $40 which is bonkers.
My recommendation to the owners: you're charging a fortune for the food so hire more staff so they can take care of the dining room adequately. Next, either reduce your prices or double the portions. You've raised the prices AND cut the portions and it's very obvious. A few ounces of chicken and 10¢ worth of rice should not cost $18. Finally, fix your dang ice situation. I've lost track of the number of times I've gone where you are inexplicably out of ice. It's 100 outside. You have to have ice.
Hopefully you can make these changes and turn things around or I suspect I'll drive by and see this place has gone out of business in the next 6 months which would...
Read moreEnvironment: 4/5 Laan Thai provides a truly authentic Thai ambience, complemented by exquisite decorations and warm, inviting lighting. Each table is graced with a small light, setting a pleasant, cozy tone for the evening. However, the restaurant's temperature settings might need a reconsideration, particularly during the frosty Logan January, as the chilly environment left something to be desired in terms of comfort.
Service: 2/5 The wait staff at Laan Thai are undoubtedly warm and welcoming, providing a friendly face upon entry. Nevertheless, the restaurant seems to be grappling with staffing adequacy, leading to prolonged wait times for service. Additionally, while the effort is appreciated, language barriers somewhat hindered the effective communication of menu details and recommendations.
Food:
Satay Chicken: 3/5 The satay chicken impresses with its rich flavors and a delightful sweet and sour peanut sauce accompaniment. However, the dish falls short of perfection due to the over-dried nature of the chicken, detracting from the overall experience.
Pad Thai with Pork: 4/5 A standout dish at Laan Thai, the Pad Thai with Pork captivates with its chewy, well-seasoned rice noodles. The dish is a near-perfect rendition of this classic, with the only slight disappointment being the dryness of the pork.
Roasted Duck Curry: 3/5 This dish is a visual treat, beautifully presented with vibrant curry and fresh vegetables. However, similar to the other meat dishes, the duck's dryness prevents this curry from reaching its full potential.
In conclusion, while Laan Thai excels in creating a genuine Thai atmosphere and offers some delectable choices, there's room for improvement in both service efficiency and consistency in the preparation of their...
