Love this place for special and personal events. It is way too pricey for my humble budget on any given day, but it is perfect for birthdays, aniversaries, and other things. We haven't been in since the start of the pandemic, so I was concerned we would notice a change in service. But we didn't.
Despite my critical comments below, none of these were worth taking a full star in any single category.
This place is classified as fine dining (which can mean so many things, really). So what that means here is they will bring the food out as YOU finish the courses. So if you like having a schmorgashboard style experience (coming back to the appetizer or salad as a palate clenser during your main dish) let them know to bring the dishes out as the chef finishes them otherwise they will be held.
Went for dinner, have never been in for lunch but friends who have gone say it is fantastic. For myself, looking at pictures of the buffet, I probably couldn't really enjoy it with all my food allergies/intolerances. I'm not sure if they also have a lunch menu.
To manage my many food allergies (some new ones even) since some of them are common but hidden ingredients, I included these on my reservation (with the OpenTable app) to ask for help in a more relaxed way then at the table. While the server wasn't prepared when we got there, she was prepared by the time we were ready to order the appetizer. Was a little disappointed to find out that the chef doesn't make the sauces fresh for the order, but honestly, the duck is better without sauce.
The duck and the lamb were excellent. Tender and flavorful at medium and medium rare, respectively. I'm not sure what is going on with the veggies. They don't pair well with the duck, and the fennel puree had no anise like flavor. But they were pretty on the plate. (Forgot to get pictures.)
The charcuterie board was respectable. The cheese of the day was amazing, a Maytag style blue goat. It was sweet and creamy with a camembert style crust and a blue tangy center line. I'm trying to track it down for my home table from the info given, but I have no luck so far. I DREAM OF CHEESE!
Since we were there for a special occasion, our desert was comped. The Blood Orange sorbet was very sour and difficult to enjoy on its own, but the Prickley Pear was a perfect blend of sweet and sour.
Their wine selection was decent, but we didn't order any since a single glass is practically the retail price per bottle (typical industry mark-up, but I just can't do it). Instead, consider a single pour with soda as a cost conscious alternative. I like St. Germain and Sprite (with the lime) as an alternative to sweet wine. Jagermeister and Sprite also make a herby apertif.
We were fortunate to get a window seat, and in a section we haven't been seated before. The view was wonderful, as always. Someday, I want to go during a thunderstorm.
I really do enjoy coming here for the food and the experience. My bar goes up as the price goes up, but I keep coming back here, so that is saying a lot. The menu changes, so things I loved (smoked octapus) have gone away, but new things come my way (Maytag blue goat), so I am never stuck getting the same old thing. Their steaks have been solid choices previously, and the Vast potaotes are cute and tasty, in a wonton skin purse and crispy fried to perfecfion, if you aren't intolerant to them.
Definitely a view that is worth lunch, a drink, or a snack of you can not do a full dinner price tag.
The dress code is supposed to be business casual, but this is Oklahoma, so whatever that means is debatable, I think of slacks and polo shirts for men as a minimum and better than yoga pants for women. And most guests fit this level. However, I saw SOME jeans and t-shirts, definitely not the same as other parts of the country, and it's def of bus cas. This does detract from the specialness of the atmosphere when you are going out for a special occasion. But at the same time, the millionaire next door doesn't wear versache either, and he probably goes far more...
Read moreSince we can see Vast from our new OKC Penthouse and we are world travelers with a keen interest in quality food & wine, we were excited to give this place a try despite having heard mixed reviews. Given it’s impressive stature, my husband surprised me and made reservations for our Wedding Anniversary end of October. While his intentions were great and most thoughtful, the experience was not only disappointing given our $500 tab but also left us absolutely miserable. I’ll explain both aspects of my complaint for those wanting a thorough review.
Disappointing
1 – The restaurant looks as if the intention was to have an upscale ambiance, but the reality is that it has the vibe of a diner. You can hear dishes clanking constantly in the kitchen while sitting at your table. Additionally, there’s no dress code, which I don’t necessarily mind, but I did not expect to see some couples in formal attire and others in t-shirts & athleisure/sneakers. I believe Vast Oil Co. must give employees advantages to dine at the restaurant.
2 – The charcuterie platter was extremely basic. Think meat and deli cheeses, no frills. NONE of the food was impressive except the Octopus, not due to its flavor profile but how tender it was.
3 – A couple without good manners was seated next to us. They had a young child with them who was about 5 years old. The child had a nasty cough, which sounded like bronchitis, and he coughed non-stop for more than 15 minutes. I felt bad for the child as he was clearly ill with chills and should have been at home in bed. However, I also wanted to enjoy the evening and he was clearly so miserable he seemed contagious, so I got up to speak with the manager. Before the manager arrived, the couple fortunately got up as they had preferred a different table near a window. When the manager arrived, I explained our concern regarding the ill child (that we could still hear coughing from further away) and also mentioned that the Charcuterie Board was very disappointing. I appreciated that he asked our suggestions on how to improve the board, but thought it was inappropriate that he said “let me control what we can control” in reference to the sick child. I do feel that management should be in the position to ask a family to leave if their child is clearly very sick and could both be a nuisance and health threat to surrounding guests.
4 – The server was polite but very inattentive. Not once did she ask how anything was tasting, if we were enjoying our food etc. The Happy Anniversary desert had the wrong number of years married on it.
Miserable
1 – We spent the whole night suffering from nausea/indigestion and not sleeping. We never have these issues and believe something we ate at Vast was either contaminated or of low-quality because we were absolutely miserable ALL NIGHT LONG.
2 – We also got colds and coughs and that spread throughout our family within 72 hours. When you are exposed to a noticeably very ill person and forced to breathe their non-stop coughing for 15 to 20 minutes, that is bound to happen.
I strongly support local business and absolutely love OKC. Rather than writing this review, I attempted to speak with management regarding my concerns but they didn't return my...
