We brought a friend here on Saturday evening for dinner to celebrate her birthday. We couldn't have chosen a better place! Initially, we were given a 30-40 minute wait time by the door attendant; she sent me to the hostess to put my name in, and we ended up being seated in about 10 minutes. (I have to note that all three women at the door and hostess stand were so friendly and well-organized!)
We were seated upstairs by Shawn, who ended up being a bright spot in the evening's experience. Talk about someone who is doing what he was meant to be doing! We could tell he loves what he does, and he is very knowledgeable about the entire menu. Shawn has the best personality for greeting diners and making them feel welcomed and valued! He chatted us up and made some great recommendations while we waited for our server to come over. Our server was Pete. He, too, did a great job. He was attentive without being overbearing, and he had a friendly demeanor.
We ordered great cocktails: the watermelon mojito (which came with a generous sprig of fresh mint and a watermelon wedge garnish), a watermelon rum punch, and a spicy mango fizz (which has mottled mango and fresh sliced jalepeno).
Our appetizers were Scallops au Gratin (which was perfectly seasoned and cooked, and would be something we'd definitely order again) and the -recommended by Shawn- Oysters Rockefeller (which were smooth, creamy, and delicious.) One of us also got the house salad, which is topped with sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, sprouts, and their famous house dressing. This "side salad" is big, so it's easy to share with the table.
Our entrees were: Seafood Orichette (Orichette pasta which was cooked perfectly, and topped with ample amounts of delicious lobster, shrimp, scallops, and sauce Newburg), Baked Stuffed Chicken (chicken breast with Ritz cracker stuffing, topped with Bordelaise sauce), and the Portugese Fish (a beautiful, huge portion of perfectly cooked cod crusted with linguica then stuffed with sauteed onions and celery which were blended with Ritz cracker stuffing, scallops, and shrimp. It was baked in a flavorful sauce of tomato and onion. Highly recommend!). The only item that was unremarkable was the orzo served as the side for the Baked Chicken and Portugese Fish. While it was perfect texturally, it was bland flavor wise, which was disappointing, considering how flavorful and harmonious every other item we'd dined on during this meal had been.
Since we'd let Shawn and Pete know that we were celebrating a birthday, at the end of dinner, they brought out a delectable slice of warm chocolate cake, drizzled in a warm chocolate sauce, topped with whipped cream. They led a boisterous serenade of the birthday song and absolutely made our friend feel special! The Lobster Pot is definitely a don't-miss place to dine in Provincetown! (They do have an express takeout only location a few blocks from this one, and there is a location in Eastham, too, that is probably just as delicious, but you likely don't get the joy of dining with Shawn as...
Read moreI visited the Lobster Pot three times on my recent trip to Cape Cod. Overall fantastic experiences.
On one lunch visit I started with Oysters Rockefeller. They were perfect! I could tell that these were freshly shucked as one still had part of the abductor muscle attached. They were perfectly flavored and perfectly cooked. The oysters were just warmed through and hovered in that sweet spot between lightly cooked and almost raw.
My entree was the Portuguese fish which was amazing, and a great value considering the quality and quantity. This dish could have easily been split between two people. I'll describe it from the bottom up: there is a mild tomato sauce with some diced tomatoes, slightly sweet but flavorful. This is topped with a breadcrumb stuffing made with a generous portion of whole bay scallops and whole shrimp in it. This stuffing is topped with a nice portion of very fresh cod that did not have a hint of fishiness. The cod is topped with I believe a Ritz cracker crumb topping sprinkled with crumbled Portuguese linguisa sausage. This is all baked and was amazing!!! The side dish served with it a delicious orzo that included other grains like pearled barley, and was a perfect pairing with the dish.
I ate other meals at the bar since I was a solo traveler. I had the good fortune of being served by the bartender named Katie both times. She was very attentive and professional with all bar guests. You you tell that she knew what she was doing, she had total awareness of her bar and guests needs.
I did have the calamari and the lobster bisque. The calamari was good but the breading was a little heavy and was slightly overcooked. Not terrible, but could have been better. Calamari is one of the most difficult items to fry perfectly and consistently.
The lobster bisque was a disappointment. It was not very flavorful, was lacking lobster meat and was a bit pasty. It was far from inedible but it was also my least favorite of all that I had on this trip.
Despite that, the Lobster Pot is still a winner for me. I would have loved to have gone back and tried more of their dishes. I also enjoyed eating out on their back deck with a great view.
The staff seemed to have it together too. I saw the floor crew working the room as a team and were attentive. And, what seems uncommon these days, management was visible on the floor. I hardy see floor managers in restaurants anymore.
All around, good...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I visited The Lobster Pot while on a trip to Cape Cod. We had spent the day visiting Cape Cod (which is very large and covers a ton of area). On the far end, we found The Lobster Pot in a city called "Provincetown". The food and service were both excellent, and the restaurant lives up to its strong reputation, but there were some downfalls...
I had the lobster roll, which featured plenty of fresh lobster meat, but it was very plain — just lobster on a toasted roll without seasoning or dressing. It was good, but not particularly flavorful. My girlfriend ordered the lobster grilled cheese, and it was easily the better of the two dishes. Loaded with lobster and paired with roasted red peppers and melted cheese, it was delicious and well-balanced.
We also tried the Oyster Rockefeller, which was some of the best I’ve had — even compared to what I’ve tried in top Florida seafood spots. For dessert, we shared the chocolate lava cake. It was decent, but nothing special, however the fruit on the side helped brighten the dish and balance the richness.
That said, visitors should be aware that Provincetown is a heavily LGBTQ+ centered community, and the surrounding area heavily promotes and celebrates the gay culture. While many people may feel completely comfortable or even celebrate that atmosphere, we personally found it in conflict with our own values and felt extremely out of place walking through the area. I find it sad that the celebration of this lifestyle dominates the area more than any other place I've even been including places like San Francisco, which I visited less than two weeks ago. There is a difference in having a "supportive" community and literally feeling out of place because you're the minority being a straight couple. In addition, THIS IS NOT A PLACE THAT IS SAFE FOR KIDS!! There is a LOT of STRONG SEXUAL CONTENT in the store's and surrounding area. It’s important to know what to expect if that environment doesn’t align with your beliefs or comfort level.
In summary: The Lobster Pot offers great seafood, and I might be tempted to return for the food alone — but the sadly, the surrounding location may not be for everyone, depending on your personal or religious views. Ultimately this may cause the demise of The...
