I visited this restaurant a few days ago at the recommendation of my brother who had ordered food delivery from this place prior. We were leaving for a long trip over seas and we’re excited for a yummy final family dinner. The service was great, and the cashier was very sweet. Unfortunately, the food was extremely disappointing. We ordered four items: soup, a minced chicken salad, noodles, and a beef curry. We asked for mild spice because my brother had said that when he has ordered medium in the past it is always super spicy(and we normally love spice). The food had zero spice at all and the chicken was very dry with no flavor. The soup had an odd sweet flavor and again, very dry chicken. The beef ‘curry’ was a few pieces of rubbery beef piled with a big lump of brown peanut sauce, on top of a huge pile of uncooked spinach. It did not look like a curry at all and there had been no mention of spinach in the description. The noodles were acceptable, and the only thing that had at least some flavor. We ordered family style and four plates and ended up paying around $72. The portions seemed pretty small…no leftovers at all. Overall it was just super disappointing especially for the price. We should have said something but were just so hungry by the time all the food came out.

It seems like this place has pretty good reviews, and like I said my brother had eaten their food before through delivery…so I’m not sure if they got a new chef or something, but I wanted to warn anyone who might be reading the reviews...

Ah, the great Thai food adventure of 2024 – a culinary quest not for the faint of heart or the sensitive of palate. In our effort to embrace the flavors of Thailand, we ordered the 'medium' spice level. Now, for those uninitiated in the art of Thai spice roulette, 'medium' is apparently code for 'Let's ignite the unprepared diner's mouth on fire.' We chose the Panang curry. Little did we know, 'medium' in this context was a euphemism for 'We forgot to mention we measure our spices on the scale of impending doom.' There's spicy food that gives you a gentle kick, spicy food that makes you break a mild sweat, and then there's the kind of spicy that has you reconsidering all your life choices up to that moment – the Panang curry falls into this last category. It's the culinary equivalent of a prank war, where the kitchen clearly has the upper hand. The irony wasn't lost on us when the other dishes, also ordered at a 'medium' spice level, turned out to be as mild as a Scandinavian summer – a confusing inconsistency that adds to the thrill of the Thai dining experience. It's as if the chefs are back there, rolling dice to decide the fate of your taste buds. So, if your idea of a good time involves playing gastronomic Russian roulette and ensuring the dairy industry stays afloat with your sudden increase in milk consumption, then by all means, dive into that medium...

Thai Canteen is an outstanding Thai restaurant, an authentic gem of a dining experience. The cuisine is simply irresistible with dishes that embody the traditional tastes of Thailand, curated with sublime skill by master chefs and served up fresh for patrons to savor.

One of the highlights, of this already stellar eatery, is the turnip cake dish, which is an explosion of flavors with every bite. The dish is a marvel of culinary texture and exquisite taste, cooked to perfection and epitomizing the essence of traditional Thai fare.

Thai Canteen excels where many other restaurants fall flat, by serving consistently delicious dishes every single time. The quality of the food is simply unmatched, and is reason enough for patrons to come back time and again. The dedication to producing tantalizing meals, always served with attention and care, has clearly paid off.

But the restaurant's charm runs deeper than the impressive culinary offerings. Whether it's an early meal or a late night snack, Thai Canteen's extended hours let night lovers indulge in trays almost at any time of the day. This welcoming Thai diner has truly become a community institution, with regulars and visitors alike taking solace in its fabulous Thai cuisine and beneath its warm environs, making Thai Canteen an experience, not just for dining, but for the unforgettable moments...

I popped in for lunch recently. It’s been a long hot minute since I’ve dined here, over seven years ago. The place looks exactly the same. The food is pretty tasty but I’m no expert on Thai food. During peak lunch hour, buckle in… it’ll take awhile for your order. The cashier spoke at the volume of a whisper. I told her I can’t hear her. She just repeated herself in the same tone and volume. I still had no idea what she was saying, so I just went on to tell her my order of Panang Nuer at the mildest version they can make it for dine in and asked for ice water. She told me the price, but again I couldn’t hear her. The Panang Nuer is sliced beef in semi-spicy panang curry. The curry tasted like peanut butter and had a kicky spice level. I can take some level of heat. So if you can’t, I dont recommend getting this dish. Also the slices of beef were super thin. There were a few slices of red and green bell peppers. Those slices were also scarce and inconsequential. There was plenty of the liquid curry though. The curry was served with a side of white rice. The price was $16, there were no lunch special pricing. The curry was tasty just not hearty enough to fill me up. And it was an entree serving size.

This is our usual hang out spot with one of my girlfriend groups. We ordered several helpings of the Fried Pork with Sticky Rice. It's my favorite item on their menu. The pad Thai is tasty as well & easy to share since it's a large plate. Don't pass up the pork belly stir fry either. It's delicious over rice. Great snack type foods while chatting it up over Thai Iced Tea and Coffee. It's a casual spot offering good food, beer & wine. Happy hour if offered as well. The manager is friendly and attentive, so is their staff. There's a small patio with heaters. It is next to the alley with lots of foot & car traffic. Especially for food pick up & delivery services. Parking can be challenging since it's in midtown with curbside parking. Often times, I circle around a few times before finding a spot.

Cute little Thai place in Midtown by Sacramento. Love the casual almost brewery vibes here. Food was great and they don’t shy on the spice! Forgot to photograph the Pad Thai, but our group was just craving the basics today and got plates of that as well as the crab fried rice. The medium spice level was fragrant and present throughout the entire dish even if you feel the need to pick out the chilies so if you can’t handle things too spicy I’d go one level below your usual! Servings are big! Order at the front and they bring out the food to you, water and lemons on self serve. Staff were super friendly. Plenty of street parking but you might need to walk a tad if you don’t find any out front of the restaurant.
