Let me just share that my husband and I are big foodies. With that said, we enjoy checking out new spots to go to and recommend those places to our friends and families. We got excited to visit this place because the photos looked amazing, I will say that. However, the taste and quality of the food itself did not match the photos. We brought our friends and their young son to this place. When we got in, we were seated by the bar and all you hear is the clanking of metal objects being thrown in the sink. Either he was annoyed or having a bad day or whatever the case, not a good spot for a family. One of our orders was forgotten which they fixed that issue. My food sadly was oversalted and had garnish that was not cut properly or they purposely cut the green onions so big to make the bowl look nice. The char SIU pork should never and I mean never be overcooked or oversalted! It has such an amazing flavor already that they butchered the taste of it making it incredibly difficult to eat, nearly inedible. Our friends got pork dumplings. Ok I was not happy about the fact that the ground pork was extremely mushy. That was not good at all. My husband's ramen also has ground pork and I tried a tiny bit. That ramen was beyond salty and the pork being mushy made it worse. My husband said it was covered in oil which is never a good thing anywhere. The mackerel was good, but why in the world were we waiting for you to serve all our orders at once and having to wait for the item that takes forever to cook. We were hungry because of our 3 hour drive. The last straw and the biggest issue I had was the ridiculous amount of flies circling our table, that by the way not a single employee bothered to take care of. I expect flies around people's houses, but not that much in a restaurant. All in all, they did not represent Japanese food in the way it should have been represented. My advice to the staff, when a customer makes a reservation, and they mention they have a kid, don't place the family too close to the bar or around so much flies. That felt like an insult. Also cut back on the salt, clearly someone isn't tasting their food before it goes out and if they are they need someone else to taste it. Last thing, do something about the flies!! Their eggs become maggots and that is absolutely disgusting to see in a restaurant. After this visit, I told my husband we are never taking our friends or family members on our food trips, because if we don't like it, there is no damn way we'll recommend it. I refuse to let our friends and families spend their money on places that don't take better care of their establishment, their employees, and their customers!! I love japanese food, and because this didn't do a good job of repping that food, we won't be back. Sorry to say. I hope they make some significant changes and people...
Read moreWalk in Thursday afternoon around 1:30pm. As you walk up to the restaurant pay close attention to the middle covered patio between two buildings this is where you check in to be seated. Apparently the restaurant seating is split between two buildings with the middle make shift covered patio looking area. It wasn’t very apparent to me where to check in as there was not a proper host stand or host to greet me as I walked through the right door only to be redirected confusingly back from where I came. I was promptly sat at a wobbling table and after the server took my order it took them about 10mins to sit me at a different table.
Per the recommendation of the server I tried the goat meat ramen. The broth and goat meat were overly salty. No issues getting swapped out to the tonkotsu. The tonkotsu was good although the cook was light on the amount of noodles. Also, Not as many ingredients as I’m used to having consisting of a small piece of nori sheet, a few mushrooms, half a marinated egg, 1.5 cup of noodles, a very very thinly sliced chashu pork belly. Definitely not worth the $14 I paid. It lacked bean sprouts and other basic essentials for a nice hearty bowl of ramen. A typical ramen bowl will fill you up without having to dive into the broth, not in this case.
In the end, I experienced horrible diarrhea the next morning. I would not recommend this place for that reason alone. The service was good which I tipped without hesitation ($10). Can’t blame the server for the product, thus the reason for this review. Another note, parking might be an issue as I had to park on the street. I don’t see any visible sign to direct me to customer parking. Expect to pay for parking somewhere close by.
Sorry, I really wanted to...
Read moreMy husband and I met here for lunch during the week. It was our first time here and Candid definitely made us feel welcome. They offer a free edamame to their new customers, which was roasted and seasoned and really tasty - my husband normally doesn’t care for edamame and he thought it was really good! I ordered a tonkotsu ramen and my husband ordered katsudon, both very good! The ramen was on par with other good ramen places in town and the katsudon was topped with caramelized onion and egg which put it over the top. The service was received from Candid was very friendly and hospitable. She told us about the mission of Kuriya and how they donate a portion of their proceeds to different charities each month. She was the only server while we were there and was equally attentive and friendly to each table there. Everything was great - just be aware that on-site parking is extremely limited. I didn’t see any on-site parking aside from a couple of handicapped spaces but there was a gravel lot diagonally across the street that...
