I am submitting this on behalf of my family, because they are, frankly, too nice.
We are Savannah locals, who have been looking forward to dining at this restaurant since before it opened. We recall walking the street and seeing their signs - and FINALLY my sisters and brother-in-law got the chance to dine there for my sister's 51st birthday.
Firstly, I will concede, that the ONLY redeeming quality of this experience was the quality of the building and the interior design - they said it was absolutely stunning.
However, that was the only positive note of the entire experience.
What I also feel pertinent to mention is that ALL OF US have worked in service, for several decades between the lot of us.
Not only did my family sit there for a solid 10-15 minutes before being greeted, but they had to wait another 10+ just for waters to arrive. The waiter was entirely unenthused from the moment he walked up - and this was only 2 out of the 3 times he was seen throughout the duration of our experience, because once he took or order we didn't see him again until he came back to clear our plates. Someone else literally dropped off our food, but he never even bothered to check on us. At all. Didn't see him.
So when he came back at the very, very end to take plates and offer the check, my sister, whom was having her birthday, asked to see the manager.
Not only was the food generally underwhelming. Barely warm, no flavor, etc. But there was so much sand in my other sister's scallops that she had to go to the bathroom and literally WASH HER MOUTH OUT BECAUSE SHE COULDN'T EAT THEM. My other sister's steak was so charred on the outside every bite tasted burnt, served along side a literal ice cream scoop of mac and cheese like it was Golden Corral, crusted and dry from sitting under a heat lamp. And my brother's short rib was bland, flavorless pot roast on a bone.
So, my sister asked for a manager and did her best to politely explain their experience. Because we have all worked in service, it was entirely too important to her to not be rude, or impolite, but it was equally as important to her to make sure the supervisor knew their experience wasn't great. Surely they'd want to fix it? Right?
Nope. Instead the manager was entirely dismissive. Completely brushed off their experience, condensed it down to people trying to get food taken off the bill, even after they insisted that wasn't their intention. They just wanted to communicate because SURELY for over $250+ for 3 people to dine you would expect not just a good experience, but a spectacular one.
Instead he took off the steak, which wasn't even the worst meal, neither him nor the server even bothered to apologize for the experience, the server nor the manager even offered dessert to be purchased, let alone to compensate for the mediocre experience at best, or even acknowledge my sister's celebration - which had been communicated to the staff with our reservation, and acknowledged by the hostess upon arrival, so it wasn't like the restaurant wasn't made aware that they were celebrating a birthday.
I don't know about anyone else, but tourist or local, I, personally, work very hard for my money. If I'm going to spend over 200 dollars on a dinner experience to celebrate my loved ones, I expect $200 worth of an experience - and that's over 200 AFTER having that steak removed because it was damn near inedible.
Embarrassing. A waste of time, and money. And, more than anything, because of the complete, and utter lack of care or empathy from the staff. All food mistakes can be recovered, poor service and attitude? Not so much.
There are much better restaurants in Savannah. We would definitely recommend Madame Butterfly, instead, if you want an experience actually worth your time and money.
This was frankly, embarrassing. As someone who was genuinely looking forward to visiting this establishment before they even opened their doors -...
Read moreAfter going to Belford for years we made our usual stop when visiting Savannah last week. We made online reservations. We got to the restaurant and waited behind other guest. After they were seated we stood there , and stood there, and stood there. Observing three people working the door running around not knowing what each other was doing. No one greeted us or said we will be with you in a minute. Then they seated the party behind us and just ignored us. I finally walked up to the hostess and said should we just seat ourselves. She said no. I said well at least you could do is acknowledge us. The manager came up and seated us. We wanted two orders of the crab cake appetizer and two sides. The server told us to get the entrée crab cake and split it that it would cost less. We said great. The order came out. On one plate. Everything on one plate. We told the lady that brought the food out that it was suppose to be split on two plates. Her reply was “ we don’t do that anymore”. And she stormed off. Mind you the restaurant was not even a third full for a Saturday night. We were like what the heck happened to this place. After eating of one plate the serve said he wanted to buy us another glass of wine or desert. We ordered desert to go. We ordered two blueberry amoretto cheesecake. They brought it out boxed up. We got the check. We got charged for one desert. We thought that we were getting desert on the house for the bad experience. We decide just to pay the check and get out. When we got home and opened the desert it was cheesecake with some red sauce poured on. I have to say this was the worst experience at a restaurant we always loved to visit. On top of that the quality of service is not that of fine casual dining. Some of the staff (especially bus staff) were not dressed appropriately to work on the floor.
Belford was always a great experience. Food was great, service was great, and the over all experience great. This time it was the total opposite. We will have reconsider coming back and spending top dollar for not so...
Read moreWe (family of 6) were in Savannah for a day trip last Sunday. We finally found parking (a charity run by the First African Baptist Church) behind the church. After getting everyone out of the car, we made small talk with a church member who was on his way home. After a few minutes of simple touristy questions, I asked him if there were any restaurants in the area that he recommended and I asked him specifically for "non-chain". He said "Why yes, I own a restaurant. If you are looking for steak or seafood, please give it a try". We got directions to the restaurant and went straight over to it.
Let me tell you, it was a great experience from meeting him through the end of the meal. The atmosphere is very nice. The building is old however it is used perfectly with the feel he was going for. The staff were super friendly and polite, and we were seated almost immediately (I never mentioned I met the owner until we were served). Our waitress was super. Meals were cooked to perfection. We had everything from my the Fried Green Tomatoes and Calamari for appetizers to the Seafood Frittata, Steak and Eggs, Shrimp Greens and Grits, and a Triple Blend Burger (chuck, brisket, and short rib). My grandkids had simple dishes from the kids meal however my granddaughter spent most of her time eating from the adult plates. The waitress noticed a "birthday tiara" on my granddaughter and took it upon herself to bring her a birthday desert made of fresh blueberries and strawberries and in house made whipped cream. My granddaughter loved it.
I highly recommend this restaurant. Its great to experience a great meal at a truly American Success Story of a restaurant. If the owner gets to read this (I hope he does), thank-you so much for taking a moment to speak with us about downtown Savannah and for recommending we visit...
